3rd Trimester

My big baby :)

I had my 32 week ultrasound last week and found out that my baby is 4 lbs 8 oz and her head was measuring at 35 weeks so their prediction is she is going to be a big baby with a big head! Eak. I didn't start getting concerned about her big head until this week when some friends were telling me horror stories of delivering a baby with a big head so now I am all worried. Anybody else in the same boat? And/or can provide words of encouragement? :) The doctor didn't mention doing another ultrasound to check her size again before delivery. I am starting to feel nervous!

Re: My big baby :)

  • My DD had an ENORMOUS head.  It was literally off the charts at my final u/s at 37 weeks.

It was fine. I barely tore, and mainly because she also had her hand by her face. They get 'coneheads' during birth so it all fits out in the end  =)

  • I was told at my 28 week ultrasound that she had a big head (the tech actually giggled and said, "It's bigger then most!") and at my 32 week ultrasound she was estimated at 5lbs 2 oz.  The weight is just an estimate and can be off by a couple pounds - but that could go either way.  DH and I both come from 9+ lb baby families, so I was expecting a big baby.  It's gonna make childbirth that much more fun, that's for sure!
  • My big headed baby was measuring 32 weeks at 30 weeks and he was 3 pounds 13 oz.  (67th percentile! )  I have my 34 week ultrasound on Wed.

I am scared, but I should have known it was coming.  DH has a big head too.  lol.  Please don't post the big headed baby horror stories, okay? Stick out tongue

  • I am in the same boat as you. At our 33 week u/s the baby was an esttimated 5 lbs 10 oz.  The head was measuring 37 weeks as well.  Big babies run in my family so I'm not too nervous.  Most likely your doctor will schedule you for a growth u/s too determine if they think the baby is too big.  My next u/s is set up for Monday so we will have a better est. on the size and can discuss birth options.  Keep in mind that u/s are basically weight guesses...they are never truly correct.  Don't be too worried...big babies sleep better, or so I've heard:)

  • I have a few comments.  First of all, they often do not estimate the size/weight of the baby well using u/s.  And you may deliver early, which could greatly affect the size of the baby.  Having said that, my u/s at 40+ weeks was almost dead on with the size of my son, who ended up being 9lbs. 2oz.  And although I tore and was in pain perhaps longer than many of my friends, I LOVED having a big, healthy looking baby!  No reason to get worried about labor.  It's something that everyone gets through.
  • I had an U/S at 32 weeks and she was estimated to be 4lbs 13oz. They were having problems measuring her head b/c of her position. I get more details on Monday at my follow up apt. I'm wondering if i'll get another u/s before she is born.

  • Thanks for the replies. I am glad to see there are others in the same boat. :) No worries...I won't share the stories I heard...I am going to forget them now.
  • One of my friends was told she was going to have a very big baby if she carried it to term, from the looks of how her DD measured on the u/s.  She ended up only being 7 pounds something, and she was one week early.   I go in for an u/s today to find out what my baby measures at.  My dr thinks it feels like a big baby.

  • I think you need to approach this from a logical perspective so you're not disappointed if you have a C-section. Try to look at it this way: you'll give your best to labouring and pushing this baby out and then in the end if you need a C-section it's not your fault because you've done everything you can. I say this because I pushed DS down to +2 station and then he got stuck. They had to push him back up and out to do a c/s.  His head was over 15" in diameter. A big head is usually about 14" so his was enormous!! I was really hard on myself but hey - a woman's pelvis is only so big!! GL and perhaps the u/s is not accurate. You never know....

  • Oops sorry I mean 15" circumference not diameter.

  • At my 36 week appointment, the head was already measuring 40 weeks.  The baby is also weighing 9 pounds as of yesterday.  I am kind of scared.
  • At 30 weeks my baby was already 4 lbs 8 ozs - somewhere in the 76th percentile. :) I go back next week to see how big she is again. She is gonna be a big baby. :)
