OBGYN says I'm a perfect candidate for a VBAC so that is what we have planned all along. Today I had to sign the consent form and was reading through all of the possible risks, and although I really want to give birth vaginally, it kind of freaked me out...
Anyone else having any reservations about a VBAC? I still want to try for it, but am now just a little more worried than before.
Anyone have unsuccessful VBAC attempts? or Success stories to share to make me feel better?
Re: Who all is trying for a VBAC?
I am. I am nervous and do have a section scheduled at 41 weeks if I don't go into labor on my own.
Checkout the VBAC board. Lots of stories shared there.
I'm trying for a VBAC but have had one vaginial birth (first birth was vaginal, second a cs and now I'm going for a VBAC) so I think that helps have less fear of a vaginal birth since I've done it before. That said, even though I'm a lawyer and can understand the rationale for the consent form, it both pi$$ed me off and scared me. I would recommend spending some time on the VBAC board, doing some additional research on VBAC vs. CS and maybe even checking out your local ICAN chapter if you have one.
The bottom line for me is that after hours and hours of research, lengthy conversations with my OB and attending several ICAN meetings I am confident that statistically speaking although the risks of VBAC and RCS are both very small, there is a slightly greater risk of complications with a RCS. Furthermore, there are increased risks associated with each CS on subsequent pregnancies and we're not sure that we are done having kids yet. Plus, for me, I know how much easier my recovery was after my first birth than my cs and that is a huge motivator for me.
In all truth, the odds are in your favor that either type of birth will occur without complication. Unfortunately, all births carry risks and for some reason doctors focus heavily on the risks associated with VBACs while often downplaying or ignoring the risks associated with CS (or even first time vaginal births for that matter). The most important thing is for you to arm yourself with enough information to feel confident going into your birth as I truly believe that confidence in the outcome can make all the difference. GL!
Thanks everyone! I know that they are required to give those forms.
Doctor thinks I'm a great candidate for a VBAC because with DD, I only had to have a c/s because she was breech. I actually ended up laboring at home and didn't get to the hospital until I was dilated to a 10 and then had to have an emergency c/s because she was breech, but because my labor went so quickly before that, my OB thinks I should be able to do it vaginally no problem.
I'll head to the VBAC board for more info.
Thanks again!
I'm not a candidate for a VBAC unfortunately... apparently my pelvic opening is so distorted from a previous car accident (5 fractures) that I couldn't give birth to a baby larger than 3lbs. haha...
If I had the option to try for a VBAC, I think I would. My labour experience was wonderful except for the c-section part at the end. There are risks to childbirth no matter how it takes place... it can be tough to see those risks listed out on a piece of paper, but you just need to make the best decision for your family based on your OB/midwife's assessment, the risks vs. the benefits.
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.
