2nd Time Moms...Inducing Labor Question

I have already been told my by OB that I will have to be induced because of my history with chronic hypertension. My questions is...at what point do they usually induce you if it is scheduled? Obviously there are other factors that could play in at any point in time, but I'm just kind of looking for what week would be the average time frame (if that makes sense). I keep meaning to ask my OB, but forget every time.

  • If the reasoning is bp, they will probably wait until it gets high enough to cause concern. Just a guess...

This. They will likely look for a beginning of an upward trend in bp. I would assume they'd want to get you past the 37 week mark and assess at that point (if you can wait that long with your bp). A variety of factors can make an induction more favorable, such as how close to your due date you are, cervix soften, dilating and/or effacement.

  • prior to 39 weeks they will not induce just based on a risk of chronic HTN, but rather only if you or baby are at risk...meaning your bp's are climbing or you are pre-eclamptic.  Some docs will induce at 39 and some at 40 weeks with a history of chronic HTN...just depends.  so, as long as you don't start developing pre-eclampsia prior to 39 weeks, you could figure you would have an induction at 39 or 40.

Thank you! Exactly what I needed to know.

  • Alot of times with BP depending on the OB its 39 weeks however after 37 if its uncontrolled maybe earlier. Just depends on the management of it.
