rosy cheeks & diaper rash?

LO has had rosy cheeks since Thursday and Friday, and he also got his first diaper rash at that time.  It's pretty red, and even has a blister-looking spot.  It came on rather suddenly and was accompanied by looser poops.  Do you think this is regular diaper rash or something else?  I googled pics of yeast infections and fifths disease and it doesn't look like that, it looks more like traditional diaper rash, but why the rosy cheeks? Teething?  Allergy?  I don't see any teeth coming in (he has 6 so far), but he gets mad when I check his mouth.  I don't remember giving him any new foods either.

Also, what would you put on it?  So far this weekend we have alternated between Desitin, petroleum jelly, and lanolin.  He seems to be more comfortable, but it doesn't really look like it's going away.

I want him to get better asap, but would love to not have to go back to the doctor.  Thanks for your help ladies!

Re: rosy cheeks & diaper rash?

  • How is he fed? Meaning FF or BF? I ask because those signs appeared when Martin was on Nutramigen but the moment I switched to Alimentum, he was just fine. Even though they're both supposed to be the same type of formula. It was bizarre. It's more likely than not something that's related to his food but I do know that looser, mucousy stools is very normal for teething. Martin also has a zinc sensitivity so we can't use anything other than Aquaphor for his bum. GL!

  • Rosy cheeks and nasty poops (which can lead to diaper rash) are both teething related. I mean, they CAN be something else, of course, but I would say that it is probably teething if nothing in your child's diet has changed.

Use caution with the CA baby products as they have changed their ingredients and many people have complained that the new formula burns/stings the skin.

  • Not sure about the rosy cheeks, but for the diaper rash I would also suggest no wipes. We use damp cotton balls. Dry the area and then apply Aquaphor liberally.

    Hope he feels better soon!

  • The symptoms sound like teething.

For the sole diaper rash DD had we gave her lots of naked time including naked naps.  We just put a towel and an absorbent mat underneath her.  When she was wearing a diaper we put Destin on her butt and used a liner since we CD.

  • I don't really have any advice. I just wanted to tell you that Em gets Really bad diaper rash often because she has "pooping problems".  The doctor has us use A and D treatment (the blue one), and it works way better than Desitine for us.  Good luck.

  • Thanks ladies!  He is doing so much better today.  Also, he does take formula (Similac Sensitive).
