Cloth Diapering

Used Diapers

My aunt bought me some used cloth diapers, but they reek of bleach. Are they salvageable? How should I handle these? Thanks!

I don't have any suggestions other than to wash them a few times. I just wanted to say that I had major issues with our diapers smelling like bleach and I wasn't bleaching them at all. I noticed the same bleach smell when brushing my teeth and decided it had something to do with how the city was treating our water. It went completely away after about two months. Obviously, your diapers probably smell from the previous owner bleaching them, but there's a chance it's not.

  • Rinse rinse rinse. I bet they were bleached before they were sold, which isn't a bad thing, but they didn't rinse enough to get rid of the smell.

  • Wash once with your diaper safe detergent, then rinse rinse rinse.  I would start out at two extra rinses after the wash and see how they are.

  • Strip them with blue dawn.  Rinse, Rinse, Rinse!
