1st Trimester

WWYD?

So my Dr. told me I would get 3 ultrasounds, first at 11 weeks, second at 18 weeks, and the last near the end of the pregnancy. Me and my DH have decided to know what the sex of our baby will be. My dilemma is that we are going to the largest mall in the world (West Edmonton Mall) and will be there during week 18 and 19. I also live way up north in BC where there is no shopping anywhere near so its all online for me (wich is alot harder than in a store). So what I wanna know is would u get ur u/s done at 17 weeks to find out the sex ( and be able to find some gender appropriate things like bedding ect.) or have the chance of not finding out and having to wait till the end of the pregnancy, OR wait till 20 weeks and have a better chance of find out with less selection??

It really depends on your practice. They may accomodate you with an earlier ultrasound, but really between 18-21 weeks is the best time to see all the organs and things they need to check out.. they may make you wait. All you can do is ask!

  • I am Canadian as well and my tech said they aren't aloud to tell you before 20 weeks because that is when they can be sure and it's not a guess. It's different in the states I have seen people on here post they were told at 13 weeks and I asked my tech and they said they have don't have the same laws in the usa and that the techs here are not aloud to tell you before 20 weeks, You can ask but the likeliness of them telling you is slim, but who knows you may get a tech who is nice and tells you. Good luck!

Thank you for your help. I was not aware of that. I suppose I can ask him at my 11 week u/s and see what he says then to decide. Thank you again!

I hope you do get to find out before you go to West Edmonton Mall. I love it there. So much shopping! Good luck and Happy 9 months!

  • I had my a/s at 22 weeks with DD1 and 19 weeks with DD2. Couldn't find out the gender with either one.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

the only way you can find out before you a/s in Canada is to pay for a private u/s, but they might not have a centre near you.  you could always buy two sets of bedding one for each gender and return one on your next trip to Edmonton ~ is that possible!?

Here is a place in Edmonton that you could have the elective done, if you wanted: https://www.uc-baby.com/en/locations/edmonton/packages-prices.php

  • I'd go at 17 weeks. But, as an aside, I'm in BC, too (Lower Mainland), and they won't tell us the sex until 21 weeks! Do you guys not have to worry about that up north?

ETA: Just noticed what PPs said and yeah, ask your doctor what can be done anyways b/c in Canada things are very strict it seems. We did an elective at 20 weeks to see the sexes since we didn't wanna wait until 21 weeks to hear it from my doctor (btw my a/s with the twins was @ 18 weeks and tech did tell us the sexes unofficially). Good luck!
