Cloth Diapering

Flip diapers + homemade detergent

Does anyone have any experience with Flip stay-dry inserts and homemade detergent?  There are so many recipes out there - is there a particular one that seems to work best?  I've read that sometimes using grated bar/laundry soap can leave a residue in synthetic fibers, and since these are made of polyester I'm wondering if that's an issue.  Is there a particular recipe that works best?  Oxiclean, bar soap, liquid, powder...?  Also, one that works well for "regular" laundry would be great (my husband has SUPER sensitive skin).

I have a top-loader, soft water...if that helps :)

Thanks guys!

  • Stay away from soap of any kind. Just use the 2 parts washing soda, 2 parts borax, 1 part oxiclean recipe.

Or you can use soap nuts. They're also great for sensitive skin.

Neither of those will be great for stain removal - you'll want to spot treat clothes if you use it on household laundry. For diapers, sun drying gets out stains really well.

  • I think that's the general consensus.  I might just have to use two different recipes: one for clothes and one for CD.  But given how easy it is to throw together and how much money it saves, I don't think that's going to be an issue :)

Stained diapers don't bother me.  I'm a FTM and we plan to have more, so reselling isn't exactly on the forefront of my mind right now.  But very good to know about sun drying, I'll have to give that one a shot!

    Thank you!!!

  • I was told no soap in the diaper detergent. So, I made mine with no soap, and a separrate batch with soap for laundry.  I made the cloth diaper detergent in as long as it took me to warm up a bottle for my nephew this morning.  I made the laundry detergent while warming his second bottle...it took about 3 minutes longer bc I had to grate the soap.  And I'm pretty sure I have enough to last the next 6 months at least!  Next I'm going to try the homemade dishwasher soap!
  • I do the 2 different detergents also and have always washed my FLIP inserts (along with other microfiber inserts, prefolds, and covers).

Here are the recipes I use:  https://www.elisaloves.com/2011/09/homemade-cloth-diaper-laundry-detergent.html

(some people don't use baking soda on their diapers, but add borax)

(I add oxiclean to the regular detergent recipe)
