Paternity leave

Do you know how long your dh will be able to take off for the baby's birth? My dh hasn't checked yet exactly how much he gets and whether it's paid or not. Curious what the norm is. Of course I want him around as much as possible to help!

Re: Paternity leave

  • DH will get 3-5 days.  UGH.

Every employer is different with maternity/paternity leave, especially the paternity side.  You should probably have him check with his HR department (or his boss/supervisor, if it's a small company).  In theory, if his office complies with FMLA, he would be eligible for up to 12 weeks of leave.  However, most of that time is usually unpaid, and there can also be ramifications for how health insurance works at that time.  I think "the norm" is usually a week or two, as most families don't want to lose the paychecks, but that's just my experience.

Plus, you'll have situations like ours, where FMLA doesn't apply for whatever reason--my DH is a surgical resident, and they just don't give docs time off, ever.  So I get 3 days, which his fellow residents will pool together and cover for him.  As grateful as I am for giving us those 3 days, I can't help but wish we lived in Sweden (2 months minimum, up to 16 months allowed).

  • DH is probably going to take 2-3 weeks and that will be all vacation time.  Where I work, men and women BOTH get 12 weeks.

  • NJ pays both men and women for 6 weeks of bonding time w/ a newborn at 66% like disability (women get it after their disability ends but I think men can take it right away).  H won't take that long b/c he won't want to be away from work that long so he might take a full week and a couple half weeks.

Good to know I'm from nj too!

  • In Canada (Ontario) parents can divide up 37 weeks.  With my ds my husband was off for 4 months (Ontario government pays for that time)

  • Last time DH took a week.  That seemed to be enough time for us to get settled at home.  He was cooking up a storm making me fancy meals!!

  • DH is Air Force and the standard a supervisor has to give him is 10 days, he will between now and then have at lease a month or more of leave saved up.  His shop is super chill right now so I'm hoping he can take as much as we decide is right.  If he was in his old shop he would have barely gotten those 10 days..it all depends

  • DH doesn't really get anything but can take what he wants. If he has paid vacation he can take that or just take unpaid time. I had LO on a Thursday morning. He returned to work on Tuesday morning.

This time I predict he will take a week off to help with adjustment with LO and new baby. She is going to stay in daycare 2 days a week when I am on maternity so we will have some adjusting to do.

At my work the men get 2 weeks paternity unpaid unless they have vacation days and they can use them. So most men save up their vacation days for paternity.

My brother got 2 weeks paid paterntiy and did not have to use vacation .He was a branch manager for a bank.

Just shows you every work place is different.

  • My husband doesn't get any sick or vacation time because he's a temp (although he's been there 16 months now). It's so stressing me out.
