Newbie with a question

Hi ladies!

I took a pregnancy test this week and it came back positive (... three times. Lol!)  This will be my first pregnancy so I have a TON of questions.  I know the next step is to call my OBGYN, but I was wondering about the timing of my first appt. I read on one of the Q&A's that the doc usually won't schedule your first appt until 8 - 9 weeks.  So does that mean there's no going in before that to confirm your pregnancy with a blood test?  I'm just a little confused because I always thought you take a home prego test... it's positive... and then boom, you see the doc for confirmation.  Lol.  Any insight would be fantastic!  I'm so happy that I'm (more than likely) pregnant and I just feel like it's all gonna disappear.  Thanks in advance, girls!

  • 6-10wks seems to be the norm around here.  Many docs don't confirm with a blood test and will just accept a positive HPT.  Every practice I have been at in school does this.  Many of the ladies who have had labs drawn to confirm their levels usually are having some type of issue, such as spotting and cramping, or they have a history of previous loss.

  • Hi there! I am also pregnant with my first and am still getting used to it.
My first appointment was at 5 1/2 weeks, they just had me do a pee test and went over my due date and gave me some brochures/information to look over.
My next appointment is at 9 weeks. They will take blood, most likely do a pelvic exam, and have me do more pee tests for things.
After that I have a 12 week appointment where I believe I will hear the heartbeat and possibly see the baby on ultrasound.

Every doctor is different though, so just call them and they will know what to do!

Our little one is due October 15th, 2012! (: Pregnancy Ticker

  • Thanks girls! That sets my mind at a little ease.  I'm just antsy since it's Saturday and I won't be able to call and schedul an appt til Monday.

  • Congrats!!!!! The wait is horrible! I found out on a Friday night, so I went through that too! I saw my doctor's nurse practitioner at 6 weeks to take a urine preg and they drew some blood for syphillis and HIV testing (tests that are required in Ohio apparently) but no hormones or anything. My doc does the first ultrasound at around 8 weeks and you can hear the heartbeat then :)   Still, I feel like time has never gone this slowly in my whole entire life!

  • I was in the same boat. I found out on a Friday after offices were closed. I managed to get an appointment the following Tuesday. I was really dissapointed when I went because I though I would get a US than but after all my test were done and my exams they set me up another exam for APRIL!! At that time I will be about 11-12 weeks Im hoping than I get the US. Its so nerve racking to wait. Congratulations!!
  • I called my OBGYN when I got my BFP and they had me come in for bloodwork that week. My cycles were always very irregular so they did a qualitative hcg test to give a range of how far along I was. Then they had me repeat the test to see how it was doubling. My first appointment was at 7 weeks.
  • My OB doc usually made me wait til about 7-8 weeks to see him too. You can always go to your regular doc to confirm the pregnancy!   =)  Good luck!

  • I just got a positive HPT on 2/29 and when I called the next day, they scheduled me for my first appointment at about 8 1/2 weeks. The wait is going to kill me and wish I knew exactly what to expect. I'm so nervious too!
