3rd Trimester

Anyone with low amniotic fluid?

I have been getting weekly ultrasounds for a placenta issue I have and this week was the first bpp that came back with very low fluid. They did another one 30 minutes later and they found more fluid pockets. Still low (less than 5th percentile for fluid) so I am getting checked again on monday

Anyoneelse going through something like this?

Re: Anyone with low amniotic fluid?

  • My doula mentioned this to me because she said the farther I go past my due date one of the things they will be checking is fluid levels.  She said to make sure you are drinking enough water and really hydrated because that can affect fluid levels.

  • I know a few people it has happened to.  In many cases, drinking a lot of water will help.  But I mean - A LOT -- basically, if you're awake and are not drinking right this second, you should be.  Constantly, nonstop.  Hopefully if you do, it will help bring your level up so they don't have to evict baby early.  Good luck!

  • I had low fluid starting at 31 weeks and was put on bedrest and then was checked 2 days a week. I drank 60-80 oz of water a day and towards the end there was nothing I could do my placenta just was becoming sick and not passing the fluids. So, while people may say drink, drink drink sometimes it has nothing to do with you and its up to your placenta to do the work and keep up its functions. I am going through these checks again, due to my first coming 7 weeks early and now they found issues with the cord this time, which can be related to the placenta. So, I am being watched like a hawk for low fluid again. In the end drink water and stay positive. Ask you doctor as many questions as you can while you have their attention and in the end everything will be perfect!
  • My girlfriend had low fluid at about 32 weeks. She had bed rest for a week and the fluid still went down. She ended up in the hospital on bed rest so they could monitor the baby and her throughout the day.  At 36 weeks she had a c-section.

You are almost 36 weeks now so that is good. Hopefully your fluid level will be better on Monday.

     Good luck!

  • Hey! Sorry to hear about your worries :( I'm going through the same thing right now too! I went in for an ultrasound last week to confirm LO's position and it was discovered the my fluid was quite low. I'm going back this week for another ultrasound to check, and if it's still low they'll induce labor.

First of all, it usually turns out to be nothing. Dehydration can be a factor, so just make sure you drink lots and lots the few days before your ultrasound. My midwife is also getting me to soak in the bathtub twice a day for the 2 days before.... Which I'm not complaining about! haha. Also, the way they measure amniotic fluid is by splitting your uterus into four quadrants, and taking a shot of each quadrant, then adding them together. There's two problems with this: 1) We're talking about a sonogram image here - not the best quality in the world 2) If the baby is moving around, obviously this won't be accurate at all.... as it moves, it will displace the fluid, making measurements go way off.

So you may find at your next ultrasound that the fluid is normal :)

If not, the fluid will be low enough that they'll just continue monitoring you weekly for the duration of your pregnancy, OR it will be dangerously low and they'll want to induce you. According to my midwife, this won't be an emergency or anything, and you'll have time to at least go home and pack, etc... but more likely you'll have a day or two before going back to the hospital.

It also depends on the state of your cervix - they'll check it, and if they hasn't been any progress yet they'll most likely proceed with cervidil, which is basically a tampon-like ribbon they insert up your lady parts and leave in there to ripen your cervix. This could take a couple days and you get to go home, etc. If your cervix is dilated and showing progress, they'll admit you to the hospital and administer pitocin.

I think that's about it.... anyways, it's not like being induced is the end of the world! Either way, it's all about having a healthy little one at the end of it all :)
