Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Environmental Allergies?

DS has gotten a ton of colds -- one every 3-4 weeks. Yes, he goes to daycare, but it seems like he gets more than the average baby! My mom mentioned to me the other day that my sister and I both had lots of "colds" when we were babies. I was put on some sort of allergy medicine at about 8 months, and I stopped getting as many colds. I still have environmental & seasonal allergies - I take zyrtec every day. My sister (who is 12 years older than me) wasn't ever put on anything as an infant and she had problems until she was 4 or 5 when she got her tonsils out and was put on allergy meds.

I asked my pedi about it today since we were there for a sick visit, and she said that allergies aren't diagnosed until after the 3rd "season." I told her how I'm allergic to everything, including MIL's dog (they live with us), and I'm concerned that DS might be. She said unless he starts breaking out in rashes/hives, there really isn't anything we can do right now...

What are your thoughts on allergies? Thanks!

Re: Environmental Allergies?

  • I've heard that babies can't really get environmental allergies until they're older. Could your LO be getting these cold symptoms as a result of something else? Like a milk/soy protein allergy?

  • I realize that this is a few days old, but I wanted to share with you that we have had a very similar experience. LO had a constant cold from Oct-Feb. There were literally NO DAYS when he was well. Pedi said allergies, so we took him to an allergist who tested for milk, soy, and dust mites. According to the skin test, he was normal. Pedi and I could not believe it, so we put him on Zyrtec and changed formula to Nutramigen. We have had great results so far! He has had a skin rash too, and that is looking a bit better as well (it's only been a week).

I'd see if you can give it a try anyway. We were told the same thing about how they can't have those allergies this early, but hey, I'm just glad something is working.
