1st Trimester

Your thoughts on fish?

So I am totally confused by eating fish???

Every year during Lent I always go to one fish fry it is kind of like a little treat that I give myself once a year since fried fish is not a great option.  So I am curious what is your thought of going to a fish fry in your first tri...should I go or skip it?

I don't know the kind of fish off the top of my head but I am sure they are not locally caught so I am thinking not high levels of mercury

Re: Your thoughts on fish?

  • I think you should convert to a religion with no Lent and eat whatever you want, whenever you want!

From what I understand, cooked fish is fine as long as you don't eat it all day every day.  Try to stay away from undercooked or raw fish.  Generally, whatever you want to eat in moderation is fine.

  • Eating fish while pregnant is actually good for you.  Just stick with the low-mercury fish and you will be fine.

This has a list of fish and the recommened servings based on mercury content:

Reguarding religion this really didn't have anything to do with religion and I can eat whatever I want I just mentioned Lent because in town here they always have great fish fries on friday nights during Lent Season.

  •  Relax... it was a joke!

I'm Jewish and I joke with people that I'm giving up sushi, alcohol, unpasteurized cheeses, and caffeine for lent, except my "lent" lasts for 40 weeks and Catholic lent only lasts 40 days!

This would be a very funny way to tell some of my Catholic friends I'm pregnant, since it seems to be the topic of conversation these days.

Sorry, didn't mean to jump on you. Sometimes you just don't know if people are joking or not on here.   That would be a good way to let people know your pregnant by saying that :)

  • Right now, the thought of fish makes me want to puke, so even though I am Catholic and usually abstain from meat on Fridays I am taking this pregnancy as a special circumstance and eating whatever makes my m/s feel better.  If you feel up to eating fish, I think it's fine - everything in moderation.  I think if you google the American Pregnancy Association (APA), their website lists which kinds of fish are safe and which ones are not due to high mercury levels.

  • My Doctor said I can have any kind of seafood except for Tuna, but you still have to make sure your food is cooked all the way.

Fish is actually healthy for you to eat once or twice a week, pregnancy or otherwise. Just stay away from things like swordfish with high mercury content and you'll be fine. Enjoy!!

  • I'm totally hitting up the fish fry tonight! I read that fish is fine in moderation, and the ones they use at most the fish frys in my area have low mercury levels :)
