Cloth Diapering

Babyville: To do or not to do?

Hello,

Dh and I will be trying TTC in the near future.  I would like to cloth diaper and am wondering if I should invest in the Babyville line from Joann's.  I have been sewing on and off for about 5 yrs, basic cottons and straight lines mostly.   I have a pretty low frustration tolerance difficulty with the machine/tension/ect.  I bought the book and each step looks "possible" but overall very overwhelming.  I would probably purchase the main bulk of my stash, so this would be for just "fun" ones.

Would you risk the money to get the Babyville stuff or just save my sewing for things I know I can do?  TIA

Re: Babyville: To do or not to do?

  • I took the class they offer and made the basic diaper cover. It wasn't very hard and I probably could have done it on my own but I had never worked with fold over elastic so I wanted the supervision of the instructor to make sure I was doing it correctly.

  • I had no idea there was a class.  That's great! Thanks I'll look into it.
  • I love their baby essentioals book! Made the wetbag last week, and am making a changing pad this week! Good luck if you decide to make the dipes. I'm having fun!
  • I took the class too.  I am a beginning sewer...like bought the machine 2 months ago and the class was the first time I used it.  I found it fairly easy to do.  The more complicated part was understanding the directions, not the fabric or elastic, because I am not very good at understanding writte directions.  I do much better when someone can explain it to me.
  • I actually love it!! I also didn't know there was a class, how cool :) I have been sewing for a while now and this is really really easy to make!!! I did the large diaper for my 28 pound son (almost 1) and there's still room to grow!!!  I love how I can choose my own fabric and even if you mess up a little it still comes out looking great! :) GL!

  • From what I've seen, the fabric they offer is low to medium quality. So based on that, I wouldn't invest too much money on the supplies. There are cloth diaper making websites and groups that will be able to give you a lot of advice if you want to go that direction.
  • I too took the class and while I didn't love the cover we made, I did love learning how to work with the materials. Since then I've tweaked the pattern and have made a bunch of one-size pockets with snaps that are super cute and function great too. I bought materials from other online sources. Good luck!
  • I pretty much taught myself how to sew by sewing diapers. It DOES took overwhelming at first but it's pretty easy once you get into it.

I have no personal experience with the Babyville stuff, though. If you don't want to invest a ton of money, you can get all the information you need online for free. The Cloth Revolution pattern has awesome detailed instructions, and the Make. Laugh. Love message board is a great place to get help. (Most of the Babyville book was taken from tutorials posted on there.) You also don't have to spend a ton on materials. You can make diapers out of old sheets, towels, t-shirts, etc. Then if (when ;) you get addicted, you can invest in the fancy stuff.
