Anybody else struggling with their skin? — The Bump
TTC After a Loss

Anybody else struggling with their skin?

Will there ever be a day when I can leave the house without a layer of coverup on?

I would catagorize my acne as moderate. Before m/c it was on the mild side. It does flare up during PMS and AF, which my OB told me is a good thing because the flare up indicates that I O'd. The only thing that worked in the past was harsh chemicals, which I will not TOUCH right now while TTC'ing. Most of the time I just accept it but some days it really "gets under my skin". Ha ha, sorry, terrible pun.

Do I have any fellow skin sufferers out there? What's your skin routine?

Re: Anybody else struggling with their skin?

  • My skin is on the fritz too.  I was told my some skin specialists that from the nose up is environmental (dirty pillow cases, not clean enough, and so on) while nose down is horomonal.  Which totally explains why my chin has been a battle ground since August.

Currently, I am using Exuviance from Ulta, with Mary Kay Moisturizer, and On a Clear Day spot treatment from Ulta.  It's doing a decent job- though I wish I could go back to my more natural cleansers that were great when I was on the pill and pregnant.

  • I went to my derm recently and expressed the same concerns. She perscribed Azelex (class B). I've only used it for a month... I don't notice a ton of difference, but enough to not feel as horrible about the way my skin looks. My derm had two m/cs herself and said she would still stop with a BFP just as a personal precaution.

  • What is your current routine like?

I wash my face 2x a day (morning and right before bed) and remove my make up as soon as I get home from work. I also drink a LOT of water to keep my skin hydrated and that helps a ton!

ETA - Forgot to mention, have you switched any of your hair products recently? I tried a new shampoo a while ago and got this massive breakout on my forehead. Turns out my skin was reacting to the new shampoo (I have bangs.) It's crazy how sensitive our skin can be.

  • Mine has been awful for the past 6 months all around my chin and mouth.  I am desperate to fix this.  I know a lot of it is hormonal, but I went as far as ordered proactive to give it a try.  I was my face twice a day in the morning and night with neutrogena products and that doesn't really do much for me.

  • My skin has been a hot mess since my BFP in September.  When I was PG, it was SUPER oily.  As soon as I found out I would M/C, the oil dried up and the acne started really badly.  It definitely goes through phases where it's better then worse but my skin is never crystal clear.  I'm now stuck in the catch 22 where I won't leave the house without make up on because my skin looks so bad but wearing so much make up is probably only making the acne problem worse.

I recently switched from Cetaphil for sensitive skin to this stuff from Neutrogena Naturals.  It removes make up better and smells better than Cetaphil but my skin still isn't crystal clear.

  • Here's my routine:

I wash twice a day with Cetaphil for sensitive skin, then I use a cotton balls and apply a light layer of 100% pure jojoba oil. It seems silly to use an oil to treat acne, but it's non-comedogenic and actually proven to unblock pores. My skin is noticeably better with it than without it. Still not clear though, lots of blackheads, whiteheads, and two or three acne cysts that are sticking around since the m/c. Why couldn't I have kept my pregnant boobs? Instead I got stuck with the pregnant skin!

Thanks all for your replies. Your routines gave me some new ideas, and it was nice to know I'm not the only sufferer!

  • I have been a life long sufferer of acne. On occasion I get super deep nodules under the skin that take months to go away. My acne has always been on my chin. My skin was absolutely perfect when I was pg, but a few days after my D&C it came back with a vengeance. Here are my top tricks that help me keep clear skin:

    1. Always wash your face with tepid water. Hot water will cause it to be dry, but cold water won't clean deeply enough. I like Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleansing Makeup Remover.

    2. Make sure you use toner after you cleanse. If your skin is temperamental, use a spray toner to minimize touching your face. Toner balances the pH in your skin and preps it for moisturizer.

    3. Make sure you have a really great moisturizing cream. Lotion is water based, and water is attracted water so it can actually leave your skin more dry than it was to begin with. Dry skin can get trapped and actually make acne worse.  I LOVE Ole Henrickson Nurture Me, it's pricey but a little goes a long way. http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P42335&categoryId=B70

    4. Clinique Clinical Dark Spot Corrector is a miracle in a bottle if you have old acne scars. After 6 months of using it I had virtually no more visible scars.

    5. I am a huge fan of Bare Minerals original foundation. It covers really nicely and doesn't make acne worse.

    6. Last but not least, and maybe one of the weirdest things I do but it definitely works ... if you want to get rid of a pimple overnight... go to your pharmacy (any CVS or Walgreens carries this behind the pharmacy counter) and pick up ichthammol ointment. It's a drawing salve. It smells terrible (like oil) and it looks like black tar. Put a small amount on a cotton swab and apply it directly on the pimple. Put a small band aid over the ointment and leave it on overnight while you sleep. You can also put a cotton ball over it and secure it with medical tape. Just be sure that whatever you are using has a gentle adhesive otherwise it can leave a mark. In the morning, voila, the infection is out and the swelling should be significantly down. The ointment basically draws the infection out. You may have to do this a few nights in a row for a super big or deep pimple.

Sorry this is long but this is definitely one of my areas of expertise! Good luck!

  • I miss my skin pre loss. It was the one thing that I honestly liked about myself. So flawless. I noticed blemishes here and there after our loss, but now I'm breaking out like crazy with tons of oil after starting clomid. Ugh!

I usually do a mask twice a week and then I use the Pure Romance line of skin care. It works really well :)

  • I am going to try everything Mrs. Carbo suggested!  Thanks!

Thanks for the link! I've tried that cleanser before and it didn't make much change for me. Glad you like it though and hope your skin is "crystal clear" soon!

  • ugh! i posted about this not too long ago!  I just recently bought the Boscia kit at Sephora and it's been about a week and so far so good! It's supposed to be all natural and non-irritating. But I definitely hear ya on the acne, it is definitely not fun especially as an adult!
