Babies: 6 - 9 Months

baby weight loss

alex went in for his 6 month checkup on jan. 6 and weighed 16 lbs. 12 oz.  i weighed him today, and by my calculation he weighs 16 lbs. 6 oz.  is this normal?  i feed him whenever he's hungry.  he is breastfed.  and has been started on solids, but lately he hasn't seemed like he really wanted more, so he hasn't had as much.  he is very active.  and we measured him, he is getting taller. i started him on a vitamin with iron a couple of weeks ago.  should i be worried?  well, i am, but should i call doctor?

thanks, ladies!

Re: baby weight loss

  • It sounds like your little guy is on a similar track as mine.

LO weighed the exact same amount at his 6 month appointment (December 28).  He's just over 8 months now and he just got over hand, foot and mouth (where he barely ate for about a week).  He was as high as 17.2 pounds but now he's back down to 16 pounds 10 oz.  He's dropped on the growth curve from 25% percentile to 10th.

We saw the pediatrician yesterday and she said that it is very normal for babies to drop down on the growth curve at/before their 9 month appointment.  She said that with their significantly increased activity level and the introduction of solid foods things change a lot.  She did say that if he didn't gain a bit back by his 9 month appointment that she'd run a few tests.

If I were you I'd call the doctor.  I felt better once the pedi checked him out.

    Good luck!

  • Weight gain can slow, even out, or drop off when they are newly mobile, so at this age that's probably the culprit. Also, there can be a difference between scales - DD1 weighted 25.5 lbs on our scale at home and 27 lbs at the pedi yesterday, weighed only an hour apart. So for a 6 oz difference, I wouldn't worry. It doesn't hurt to call the pedi if you are truly concerned, but I'll bet he's just fine.

  • Most babies slim down when they start moving more around this age. You scale may not be exactly the same as the Drs too.
