Stinky pee

Hi everyone!

I just started cloth diapering...this week. We don't even use them all day every day because we don't have enough yet and we're just trying them out. The first few days they were great and I loved them. But for the past few diapers I've used today, after I take them off they smell. I've heard that if they aren't cleaned properly they can get an ammonia smell to them but they don't smell like that...they smell like baby formula.

I just started supplementing with one bottle of formula per day. Well, more like half a bottle- 2 oz of breastmilk mixed with 2 oz of formula. Could that be causing the smell? Or did I really just not clean them properly? Here are the details of what I did:

• I have been supplementing with Similac Advance Ready-Feed since last Tuesday (a week ago)
• I have a front loader washer. I prepped the inserts (I have Grovia AI2s and Thirsties Duos) by boilng them for 30 minutes. With all subsequent washes I've done a cold/cold rinse and a hot/cold wash with BumGenius detergent. I've had to dry them in the dryer instead of sunning them because its been raining here.
  

What else can I do? Is this normal? I looked at the FAQ and I couldn't really find an answer that I was looking for. Thanks!

Your child's pee is going to smell differently when you feed them something different. If you're smelling something after your LO pees and not ammonia, then it's just their pee and you can't do anything about it. You won't notice it in disposables because of the chemicals used to mask the smell of urine.  However, if you can smell something after washing the cds then you're not using enough soap.

That's what I thought but I have been supplementing for the same amount of time since I've started CD so I thought I would have smelled it before today. The diapers don't smell after I've washed them so I guess it is just her pee...its stinky though! Hopefully I can get my supply back up soon! Thanks

It's probably just excess vitamins in her pee. Sort of like how multi vitamins make your pee bright yellow. Pee that smells really rank...like smell it from the next room bad.... Could be an early sign of a uti. It was for us anyway.

as long as they don't smell out of the dryer, it's probably not the diapers
