TTC after 35

How many follies can you do an IVF?

My last cycle I got 3 large follies and my RE did an IUI (which was a BFN). I am starting my next attempt and was wondering, has anyone my age done IVF with only a few follicles? My RE when we initially discussed treatment said he didn't recommend IVF cause you don't want to put the stress of being taken in and out of the body on older eggs, which are fragile. I agreed at the time, but since my first cycle produced 3 huge follies (never had such good size follies or more than 2 follies before), should I push for IVF?

Re: How many follies can you do an IVF?

  • I have done IVF with 1 follie. It depends on the RE. Most won't do with that few but some will.

  • Like McIrish said it depends on the RE, mine wants 4 before they retrieve but I just got my RE to agree to go ahead next time with 2 since that is all my ovaries seem to want to produce every month.  Good luck!

  • Mine will retrieve with three follicles. He said that He has retrieved only one in a certain case but that would not be standard practise.

I'm praying for three......out of all of the medicated cycles(IUI's) my last one  was the only one that yielded three.

TTC since 2009 very frustrated 42yr and DH 40

surgery suggested to move ovary to an better placement but....we moved two time zones away and are financially and emotionally empty

  • Are your dosages of drugs similar to IVF dosages? If not, you'll probably get more follicles growing for IVF than with the IUI dosages.

    Good luck!

  • I had three and that's what my RE likes to see. He would have gone to retrieval w/ less given that I was not willing to convert to an IUI. Good luck to you.

  • I had one at retrieval twice, and the last cycle we retrieved three.  Found that many Re's (and I had 3 different at same clinic) are quick to try to cancel the cycle if there are not >3 at very early monitoring appts.  Part of the quick trend to cancel is to tell you how much better your chances would be with DE.  But, I can tell you from experience that is a card that only you and DH can decide when it's time to play.  They don't want women with DOR to bring down their success statistics, and that is a HUGE piece of the problem in general.  They may tell you that they cancelled, so that you don't have to pay/have ins. Pay for a cycle that yields very few follies.  Most insurance will pay for not more than 4 retrievals per lifetime.  We pushed time and time again to get to retrieval, because at least we'd known that we had made it to fertilization and had some hope of a successful outcome.  Actually for me, all embryo quality at 3dt looked pretty good.  We had insurance coverage for one year....and wanted to see if we persevered if we could take home a sticky BFP.  Good luck to you.
