40th B'day holiday planning help needed....

Ladies

I have a dilemma and I need some advice.

This year is my 40th birthday and like my 30th I wanted to escape the norms of life and we went to Kenya for 2 weeks. This year I cannot be away for my actual birthday as DH has a second cousins wedding ? they know that I do not want to go? celebrating my 40th at a wedding? nice!

Anyway, we are now thinking of going away the week prior to the big day (around Aug 18-24 (big day on 8/25)) and I need some tips on where to go.

My criteria is that I do not want to have to travel a crazy amount of time. That said, I am Australian and used of flying 10+ hours to get anywhere in the world.  Being August, then the southern US is sort of out due to hurricane and humidity, we have done Seattle, NY, Boston and a few national parks. I was then thinking Ireland (my heritage is Irish and my maiden name is one of the 32 counties of Ireland:  Carlow), or Paris (but DH had a trip there 12 years ago with an ex so I sort of have issues with Paris then) and another thought was Portugal.

I am trying to find a single flight from LA, no stops and no more than 10 hours flying time ideally.

The only issue I have with Ireland is that I had told the MIL ages ago  I wanted to go away for my 40th and then had mentioned that I wanted to go to Ireland one day, she now is telling everyone that I want to go to Ireland for my 40th. I am pissed that she is putting words in my mouth and will not let up about it. I am at the point of telling her to stop saying this, stop putting words in my mouth and stop controlling me (she controls DH and his siblings). Maybe Ireland is not a good idea. She even told the mother of the bride that I did not want to go to the wedding as I was going to be in Ireland ? ARGH!!!!

Any suggestions from anyone? It will be summer when we are travelling; I have seen a lot of the States as I backpacked around the country for 15 weeks back in my 20?s. Past trips have included London for 3 days, Barcelona for 3 days and 2 weeks in the Greek Islands, so Europe is still to be discovered by me.

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations then let me know.

Almafi is on my bucket list too, but I heard that in August it is not only hot but also really busy. I will add it to the list though... thanks!

  • I have always wanted to go to Ireland, but my Dh doesn't want to.  If you don't want to go there because of your MIL, then my suggestion is Hawaii.  Dh and I love Hawaii and can't wait to go back.  Maui is our favorite island, and Kauai is pretty.  The big island is nice too and you can see active volcanoes.  Oahu was our least favorite since its the most crowded, but still nice.

We were supposed to travel Italy for our honeymoon too with a few days on the Amalfi coast, but for the same reason (buying a house) we changed our minds. I would love to travel Italy someday though!

  • Have you ever considered Asia? I know a lot of people have no interest but there are some amazing countries in Asia. Bali is amazing but it would be it is a long flight. Another favorite is Laos (Luang Prabang) -it is amazing and romantic and Cambodia-Ankor Wat is beautiful. The shopping is phenominal in Asia. I have used a great travel company (escapes unlimted-its website is escapesltd.com...not sure if that will post) If anything they have unique places and ideas in Asia or South America and great deals.

I went to Italy (Florence/Siena) in September and as beautiful as it was it was disappointing how expensive it was. I like good deals and being able to shop without breaking the bank.

Good luck and have fun! I did Thailand for my 30th and technically Italy was for my 40th!
