Can't seem to get GD under control :(

I feel like such a failure and that there is no rhyme or reason to my numbers.  I have to bring more numbers to the doctor tomorrow and I don't want to keep having to take more and more medicine.  Today I ate a breakfast that in the past gave me 125 and 126, and today it gave me 165.  This is after I moved around the house for the two hours to try to see if that would make it be under 120.

The lowest fasting I've been able to get was 99 once, other than that it is usually around 110-115.  I just feel like I'm hurting my baby so badly and I can't stand it. :(

It can be really tough and it sounds like it is not something you are doing by food choices, but your body just being resistant. It apparently gets harder to control from 30 weeks until 36 (from what I have read here). Are you on oral meds? Scary as it may be, insulin may be able to help dramatically. It is much more predictable and trends seem clearer now that I am on insulin and not Glyburide. I also struggled with my fasting numbers and have had almost all good numbers since the insulin, even though they are starting to creep up a bit now.

My insulin is being adjusted accordingly as my numbers creep. I was admitted to the hospital 2 weeks ago so they could increase the insulin to where it needed to be. Now most of my numbers are in a manageable range and just a little tweaking should help. You are doing what needs to be done for your baby- many women with GD do not go to the doctor with their numbers and do not seem to care that their sugar is high (according to the nurses and doctors I see at the hospital who love me for being diligent). Sometimes we cannot control our bodies and just need a little extra help.

    Hang in there!

Yes I am on glyburide....maybe he will change me to insulin soon, I just don't want him to keep having me take more glyburide.  I'm glad your numbers have been good since you've been on insulin.  Thanks for the help!

I, too, am on Glyburide. Not having the best fasting numbers but everything else is ok. From time to time I will have some wacky numbers even though I have felt in the past that was ok to eat and would get ok numbers. Just out of curiosity how much glyburide are you on? What is the dosage and how often do you take it. I was ordered to take my glyburide 1/2 hour before eating and have noticed when I don't I tend to get higher numbers afterwards. I too am concerned that they will have to keep making me take more and more meds to combat this.

I believe you can request to go on insulin and most doctors will agree. I know that I was very reluctant to request it since I am petrified of needles, so let them continue upping my dose of Glyburide. I didn't get the choice so to speak because I was having some high-highs (160s+) and some regular numbers (around 100 2 hours after a meal) so they couldn't up the dose without making it dangerous during the times that it was working.

I was taking 5mg glyburide at night and 2.5 in the morning and was told they should each last about 12 hours, so it wasn't with each meal and such, which made it tricky. Now I take insulin 3x daily (One big mixed dose in the morning of "fast" acting and "long" acting, one "fast" before dinner and one "long" before bed. There are fancy terms for fast and long, but I can't remember them right now lol)

I take 7.5 MG at breakfast and 7.5 MG at dinner.  Are you saying that you have better results when you take it half an hour before eating than if you took it with the meal?  I always take it right at the start of the meal.

I haven't requested to go on insulin yet but I did tell him I was nervous about glyburide.   I'll have to see what he says tomorrow...

I don't have any experience with Glyburide (my OB went straight to insulin for me), but I do have to say that insulin seems to helping keep the numbers down. I haven't seen a dramatic difference, but that could also be because I'm on the lowest dose of long-acting insulin (taken only at night), and I'm within that last big hormone spike range (30- 34 weeks), so I was told to expect higher numbers now anyway. I am coming up with decent numbers at least 90% of the time though. I have to call in my numbers to my nutritionist/diabetes specialist tomorrow morning, and we'll see what she says; they may increase my dose a little to get further within the "comfortable" blood sugar ranges, rather than just under.

Hang in there though; if you're doing everything you can to control your diet, and you're advocating for yourself with your doctor, then you're doing your absolute best!

You're not doing anything wrong.  It's how your body is processing hormones, etc.  I had diet controlled GD with my son.  I eat the same thing for breakfast everyday and my numbers get out of control.  THey put me on meds which will control my numbers for a few weeks and then they'll start going back up. I''l get my dose increased and then the numbers will do the same thing.

Thank you....you guys have made me feel a bit better.  I can't believe this is just going to get harder to control, though!  So frustrating.

yes, I am to take it 30 min before eating. I can tell a difference like if i forget and take it like 15 min before then my numbers dont react as well. Maybe try the 30 min or ask your doctor about that. The last time i was on it (last pregnancy that ended in miscarriage) i just took it before bedtime with no food. So I think you can do both...but I do notice a difference when i take it 30 min before.
