Hi ladies! Lurker and FTM here. I'm planning on going with the BG 4.0 and Thirties Duos with covers for my main stash. From what I've read though, they probably won't fit well on a newborn for those first couple weeks. What do you recommend I use? I don't want to spend a ton of money on a whole stash LO will be out of in a months time, so I was thinking pre folds and covers maybe. From your experience, how do these hold up to the messy newborn poos I've heard so much about?
I was also debating about trying the newborn package from
Jillian's Drawers. Do you think this is a good value and a good way to go?

Most people recommend either prefolds or fitteds with covers for newborns. My LO hated prefolds when she was a newborn, which is what I had planned on using. For the next baby, I would like to purchase some GMD nb prefolds (I think the size/brand I bought for LO was just too bulky for her liking), workhorses, and some WAHM fitteds from etsy. I will probably use PUL covers with all of those. Additionally, I will need to make some itty bitty fleece liners in case #2 doesn't like feeling wet, like #1 did. She was so darn picky! The fitteds and workhorses (prefold/fitted hybrid) hold poop in way better than prefold, IMO.
As for the jillian's drawers trial, it comes with 13 diapers, which will last 24 hrs. It's more of a way to try all of the different types of diapers to see what will work best for you. My LO fit into OS diapers at 3 weeks, so the nb trial would have been a waste for us.
We've been very happy with GMD workhorse fitteds - the elastic contains the poop so I can reuse the covers over and over again. And I already have friends who have offered to buy them off of me - I think they hold resale value really really well!
I also liked Thirsties Duo Diapers, since they fit well early on (well, on my 8 1/2 lb. newborn chunker) and I like that they will last to about 15 lbs or so, so they aren't exclusively newborn.

Hi there. My daughter is 3 weeks old so I will weigh in with my limited experience. My NB stash consists of 12 KL0s, 12 BG XS/NB AIOs and 12 prefolds (I think they are the old style GMD infant size green edge, comparable to the current yellow edge). We unintentionally skipped the orange edge because she was a little early and I didn't get around to ordering them. We have 2 thirsties XS covers and 5 prorap NB covers.
DD was 7lb, 5oz at birth and we started with the CDs when she was 3 days old. She is a very average-sized baby.
KL0s - seems like they will fit her for several more weeks, though may soon require a doubler for extra absorbancy. Work well with the thirsties and prorap covers and in the last few days even the OS Grovia shell I have. No poo-splosions or leaks.
BG NB AIO - MH & my favorite diaper. Super easy to use and fairly trim. She probably has another week or two before outgrowing them. I put a BG size S AIO (discontinued) on her yesterday and it fit fine. No leak or poo issues. I would have been happy with an entire NB stash of these, but they are pricey.
Prefolds - Since I didn't have NB PFs, I only started using the infant size ones in the last week. I use the angel wing fold but first fold down the back of the dipe about an inch to fit in the XS cover. I only like using these with the thirsties covers. No leaking, but poo gets on the cover occasionally (but is completely contained). These will be perfect when DD fits in the S covers.
All three types of diapers work well for us (PFs would have worked better the first 2 weeks if we had the NB size, but that was my fault!). I purchased everything used and definitely spent considerably less than what 3 weeks of Pampers would cost, so I'm happy.

I have heard that the size 1 get really small and will fit newborns well. I have no tried them.
For DD I had prefolds and used some xs thirsties covers. They worked just fine for newborns and their runny poo. I just trifolded my prefolds and laid it in the cover. I did have poo get on the cover often but never really had it get on her clothes. If it did leave the cover, it was a very small amount. This time we do plan to use a snappi since they help keep the poo in the prefold a bit better. I am also trying out some blueberry mini covers since I love their one size covers. I would love to try some bum genius newborn AIos but am avoiding them since they're so costly. I can get 1 dozen prefolds for the amount of one AIO.
I wish I would have done the Jillian's drawers trial but I would wait until your LO is in one size diapers. Some of the diapers I bought for DD didn't work well and I would have gotten a much different stash if I would have done a trial. I would just get some covers and prefolds for the newborn stage and then do a trial before you buy your complete one size stash.
Thanks for the input. It sounds like pre folds are a must have, so I will definitely add them to my list.

My newborn stash consists of workhorse fitteds, KL0, XS BG, Grovia, Diaper Rite Newborn prefolds and GMD yellow edge prefolds. I have Thirsties XS, Thirsties Duo 1 and Bummis covers.
My go-to diapers are the workhorse fitteds, hands down. DD will be 9 weeks old tomorrow and she can still wear the NB sized ones and will be able to for a while longer. With that said, she can also wear the small (yellow edged) ones. I recommend starting with the yellow edged ones b/c they have a doubler sewn in. Lots of ladies recommend the ones with no snaps b/c you can get a customizable fit. I like my workhorse snaps and no snaps equally. I was a little intimidated by the snappi at first and it was nice to have the snaps.
My next go-to diaper are my KL0, which DD is also still wearing comfortably. I love them and will be very sad to see her grow out of them. They also dry pretty quickly which is a plus for me.
I like the Grovia diapers but they take forever to dry. She has also had a few leaks in them and will be too big for them very soon.
My least favorite diapers are my BG. I had problems with them repelling from the very beginning. She would have grown out of them very easily as well. Luckily I bought them on seconds from Cottonbabies, so I didn't have a lot invested in them.
Diaper Rite prefolds were great but she grew out of them very quickly.
GMD prefolds are also great but the DR were just as good and less expensive.
Good luck!
FWIW, I hated the Duo diapers, but loved the covers.
We used prefolds (my preferred choice), kissaluv contours (dh's preferred choice), KL0s (which we used only when we had to), RaRs, Applecheeks, Duo the diaper, BG sized AIOs.
I'd just get an assortment and see what you like. NB stashes are cheap and are constantly being bought/sold, so you shouldn't have any trouble picking up items. Good luck!
My absolutely favorite newborn diaper is the Tots Bots TiniFit, but they are not cheap ($15-18 used and new). They are really absorbent even without the included insert and they dry pretty quickly.
I also like the BG XS AIOs, but DD is outgrowing their absorbency already (and she is only 7ish pounds). We've started putting the Tots Bots insert into it and that seems to be helping, so hopefully we'll get another few weeks out of it.
Also a fan of the GMD WHs, although DD pees through those like crazy too. But those paired with Thirsties XS covers (or Duos size 1) work really well and are on the cheaper end.
My last favorite are Sposoeasy XS AIOs, but the company went out of business so they are impossible to find.
I, personally, was not a fan of prefolds, but they worked well enough.
