Hospital/OB... Overwhelmed

We just found out that we are having our first little one in November and I am super overwhelmed trying to figure out the best place to deliver and find an OB. I have been going to a fertility clinic and they confirmed with blood tests and gave me my due date, but now I need to find an OB.

I am paranoid and would like to deliver somewhere with a NICU just in case. We live in Eagan and I work in St. Paul, so I was thinking United would probably be our best bet. DH is convinced Abbot is the way to go...

Any opinions on either hospital and have a good OB recommendation? We have pretty open insurance, so I am less concerned about networks.

Re: Hospital/OB... Overwhelmed

  • if i were choosing between the two I would go with United.  Lots of other hospitals have NICUs and Level 2 nurseries as well so you may consider your options beyond "needing" a Level 3 Nursery.

  • I delivered at Methodist both times, and had a great experience. If you were in a fertility clinic, I would guess you may be better off with a specialist OB such as a perinatologist? I used Dr Leslie Pratt at Methodist (in the Meadowbrook building) and her office hands down was absolutely the best and diagnosed a rare condition that could have killed my baby, but through her very careful management our LO was born perfectly healthy and with no complications. I highly recommend her!

  • Sorry, forgot to add: if you are set on either hospital, I would rec Abbot, as their perinatologists partner with Dr Pratts office to give very highly specialized prenatal care. Abbot is the only Level 3 NICU in the area, so their perinatologists are also very highly skilled and can manage any problems that may crop up.

  • United is also Level 3 as they are both affliated with Children's.

  • I have heard only great things about United.  I would definitely encourage you to pick a hospital that A: you are comfortable with and B: is close to your work!

We picked Methodist because we love our OB and that's where she delivers...but we live in St. Paul.  Early on in the pregnancy, that's no big deal...but the 30 minute drive once a week (later on in the pregnancy + a few extra appointments due to small issues) during rush hour before 5pm (they only have clinic hours until 5pm) is tough on the work schedule...if you are comfortable with a hospital close to your work, I'd highly recommend it.  It makes things easier.

  • I went to United and had a great experience. The NICU was at my delivery b/c DD had meconium. I was very impressed with everything except one postpartum nurse but nothing bad about her. We just didn't jive. Parkview OB/GYN has an office at United and there's also one in Eagan. So far I've had very good experiences with all their Drs. I did an u/s at the Eagan clinic and they were very nice.

  • I delivered the twins at Abbott. I was 10 weeks early and they webt straight to Children's for the forst few days. Then they transferred back to Abbott for another 40 days before discharge. Great staff and I would recommend them to anyone.

  • Both Abbott and United are Allina affiliates and both are connected to Children's of MN.  I guess if I were you, I'd go with United, since it is closer to where you work and closer to Eagan than Abbott.   However, I do know that Abbott is planning a Mother/Child unit - not sure where they are at with that project, but if they are close to done, I be willing to bet that new unit would be really nice and still very nice & new for a November delivery.

No personal experience though, I'm delivering at Fairview Riverside, as I work there, and they are connected to Amplatz which also has a NICU.

  • I'm going to HCMC and using the nurse midwives group there. The midwives have their own unit and you stay in the same room for labor/delivery/postpartum care. Plus they allow water births for low risk patients, have free doulas, a level 3 NICU + awesome SICU in case I have any problems. I might be bias though because I work there too :)

  • A friend of mine delivered both of hers at United and she liked it.
  • FWIW...  I delivered at Regions then spent a week at Childrens/United with DS in the PICU because of a freak accident...

Regions also has an NICU...  I would say that L&D and the times I was there for monitoring was fantastic, PP not so much...  The food was adequate but they do not serve any pork which isn't such a big deal except I don't eat turkey so that was a lot of what they serve instead...

As for Children's and United...  I have to say their food is far superior!  I know, it's the little things in life sometimes (their Oatmeal raisin cookies are two thumbs up! especially when you're trying to build supply BF)...  ANYWAY, Children's was great when it came to their PICU in that they have "suites" for their PICU such that you can either stay in the room (has a fridge, pull-out, and bathroom) at all times or they have family rooms that you can check out with showers..  The nursing staff was wonderful as well.  Their main floor kids rooms are going to be going through a move in the next year or so and will be updated.  The main floor is a little different now in that the adults have to go down the hall if you need to go to the bathroom (there aren't private bathrooms in the Children's main floor bathrooms which is kind of eh)...  But overall, Children's in SP was great and if memory serves me correctly that's where the L&D is located anyway...
