Am I the only one...

that has a child with a bedtime between 10-11pm?!? She's killing me!

Sam doesn't go to bed until 10-11pm and usually wakes up around 8:30am. She'll take her 1 nap around 11a-1p and sleep for about 3 hours. So, she is up from 3pm the latest 'til 10-11pm. What gives? This is ridiculous! How can I fix this? She is currently crying in her crib and I have been trying to get her to sleep for 1/2 an hour!

Re: Am I the only one...

  • I actually found that the earlier I tried to put John down, the better.  With all the reading I've done about it, they say that putting them down later is counterproductive, because when they are tired their brain produces a chemical (serotonin maybe?  I don't know my brain stuff) to help keep them awake, meaning they will have a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep.

John goes to bed between 6:30 and 7, and sleeps until 7:30 or 8 in the morning.  He takes a morning nap, usually around 10, for about 1 hour.  He then takes an afternoon nap, usually around 2ish, for about 2 hours.  He can wake up at 4 or 5 and still go to bed at 6:30 or 7 and sleep through.  I found that the most important factors were having a regular routine and being consistent about it.

I hope this helps, and good luck!

  • What happens if you try to put her down earlier?  Does she scream?   I know some people gradually try to move the bedtime earlier.  I'm surprised she can stay up from her nap until 10:00 pm.  That's a long time!

DS is in bed at 7:30 every night (sometimes he will chat to himself for a bit) and sleeps until 7:00 - 7:30 am.  He naps at 10:30 am for an hour or two.  Then he'll take a short nap (maybe a half hour, but sometimes longer) at around 4:00 - 4:30.  In total, he naps for 2-2.5 hours a day.  If he's had a shorter afternoon nap, he's already getting tired by 6:30 - 7:00 pm.

  • H goes to bed around 10 but that is when I go to bed also and she sleeps with us. She will wake up anywhere between 8-9 in the morning. I am ok with it though.

  • Griff wakes up at 7am.  Naps around 10:30am til lunch.  Sometimes he'll nap around 4pm (for 1-2hours) so if he does then I'll put him to sleep at 9pm.  If he misses his afternoon nap, then I'll pur him to bed closer to 8pm cause he'll be acting super sleepy.

Maybe Sam is overtired?  Could you try adding an afternoon nap or try putting her down earlier?

  • The literatures says earlier to bed, later to rise. I wish it were true for my son. He goes to bed at 7am and wakes at 5:30 or 6...6:30 if we are lucky. We tried various bedtimes and no other time produced later wake-ups. The single nap is usually no longer than an hour.

But don't take my kid as an example. Most will get more sleep overall if they go to bed earlier. You could move it back gradually. And yes, I would just make her cry until she gets it and just goes to sleep earlier.

Holy crap that is a lot of sleep. I'm pretty sure sleeping 16 hours total at this age is an anomaly. You are very lucky! Avery sleeps 13 total hours on a good day.

  • My LO gets up between 6 am and 8 am. then takes a nap between 9 am an 10 am, and sleep for 1-3 hours. I put him to bed between 1 pm and 3 pm, where he sleeps for 1-2 hours. And then he goes to bed between 6 pm and 7.30 pm :)

So totally he sleeps for ca. 15 hours a day :)

But I just pay attention to his face, if I see one jawn or rubbing eyes, I give him a snack and change his diaper - and put him to bed.. (Because as stated over, if he stays tierd for a while, he'll never get to sleep)

    Hope this helps :D

  • Brooklyn goes to bed around 8:30-9:00, she takes one or two naps a day usually a short one after breakfast 1/2 hour and a longer one after lunch 2 hours. She usually gets up between 7 and 8:30. Going to bed any earlier because we don't get home till 6 and if dinner is already made then great but sometimes it's not. Then comes bath and a little play time and before you know it it's 8 and we start our routine.

  • You could try waking him up in the morning a little earlier every day, maybe by 15 minutes, and moving his bedtime up, too.  I never thought I'd recommend this either (we did attachment parenting, the whole nine yards, for most of LO's first year), but Ferber's Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems is a great resource.

  • Thanks everyone!

I'm going to try putting her to bed a little earlier every day and see how that goes. I do have the Ferber book, so I guess it's time to crack it open again (used it to wean DD off the bottle). We'll see how it goes. =/

  • My kids go to bed between 7 and 7:30 and get up around 6:00.  I think Isaac would like to sleep longer, but as soon as he hears someone up he is ready to go.  He takes one nap most days (some days 2) for about 2 hours.  So he gets about 13 hours a day of sleep.

I think you may have to wake her up earlier as well, like 7 am instead of 8.

  • Lily has a later bed time, about 900-930, sometimes 10. But we put her on that schedule because we both work night shift and are not morning people anymore. She will sleep until 800-830 and take a 2-3 hour nap around 1pm. It works pretty good for us so far.
