Baby Names

Good, bad or ridiculous?

DH and I love the name Ronan. It's not very common in north America so I'm wondering if it's too odd for Canada lol. Opinions???

  • It's a fine name.

I live in Canada and I have known a few. (I knew one about 25 years ago and the other two are younger)

  • I really like it!  I've heard it only a few times before, but certainly not ridiculous.
  • I like it. It's a boy's name, correct?

Is Rowan a girl's name? I also like that.

  • I am Irish but have been living in Boston for 10 years. Ronan is a popular name in Ireland, but this year we have known of 3 Ronans being born here!!  I like it!!!

  • Not unheard of at all. In my area we have a huge population of immigrants from the UK, etc, so it would be familiar. You can look up registered names in each province by year to see what's being used.

     Here's Alberta's:

FWIW, I like it, and MJ's suggestion of Rowan. Ronan had 24 in 2010 and Rowan had 39 (when you take in all the spelling variations). Not bad considering Liam, the top name has about 300 entries.

  • I like it. Not too odd IMO.

  • I've met several Ronans, Rowans, and one or two Romans in the Boston area. Don't know what part of Canada you're from but there are so many people of Irish descent in the East that Ronan shouldn't be uncommon. It's a great name!
