Cord Blood Donation Advice

My husband and I are considering doing this and wondered if anyone else has and if so what company did you use?

19 weeks and counting :)

Re: Cord Blood Donation Advice

  • We are not, because we're not planning to have any more kids and right now most of the potential benefit would only be to a future child, not the one it came from.  We also are planning to have the hospital delay cord clamping until the cord stops pulsing to reduce the risk of iron deficiency in the baby.  I don't think you can do both.

Here's some info if you're interested:

Donating cord blood has nothing to do with your own kids.  You will be donating to others.

  • we donated cord blood of both babies.

the first time i went thru a group that was kind of unorganized ... this time i used carolinas cord blood bank (see below).  they sent the kit and a return fedex label.  they also sent an email confirmation and require that the doc do a short online training so that they complete the kit properly ... i recommend.

congrats on your baby, and congrats on donating ...

  • We did this.  We went right with Karmanos Cancer Center as that's who our hospital works with.

  • I need to get this info from my doctor.  I think our hospital has something set up for donation, and I want to make sure he knows I want to do that.

  • Are you considering straight up donation- or storage for your own child/usage? I'm doing for my own child as I had an egg donor and may need addition resources down the road should a medical issue arise.

Overall it came down to CBR and Viacord as the two best in the country on a national level- and between the two- the major difference was that CBR had waaaay better customer service.

Your OB should be able to provide you with their feedback, as well.
