So, I had an excruciating and strange pain with other symptoms this weekend, and I just happened to have an appointment with my ObGyn scheduled today. When I described everything that happened, she said it sounded like either a ruptured ovarian cyst or a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
She told me to schedule an ultrasound, and we'd figure out what's going on, and she didn't mention that it needed to be scheduled within a specific time frame. So, I scheduled it for next Friday which would put it 2 weeks past the "episode."
Now I'm wondering if that is too far out. How will she be able to differentiate or even tell that anything happened? Will there be some sort of remnants left over from either a cyst or ectopic pregnancy that ruptured?
I feel like an idiot, but I'm not sure what I'd rather it be. If it was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, that means I can get pregnant. On the other hand, ectopic pregnancy could point to problems with getting pregnant that I didn't even know I had. Also, ectopic pregnancies heighten the risk of future ectopic pregnancies.
Sorry for the rambling, but is their any way I could tell what really happened? I thought about a HPT, but if it was ectopic and it ruptured Friday, would any traces of HCG be gone, or at least undetectable?
Re: What's going on?
I'm kind of surprised she didn't stress more immediacy over it.
Are you still in pain?
I was under the impression that if you had anything ruptured that you'd need quick medical attention, because you can bleed internally. If it was an ectopic it would depend how long it had been going on. You need HCG of 15+ for a HPT.
She didn't offer a test of any kind? You might want to call her office and ask the workers. If it's as serious as it sounds like it could be they should be able to get you in much quicker.
The pain is gone which she said means it is not an emergency. Apparently, whatever kind of rupture it was, was small enough that it didn't cause a dangerous amount of blood loss but it could still indicate either ectopic or cyst rupture.
She said it was most likely a ruptured ovarian cyst, but we should do the ultrasound to make sure it wasn't an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured. I made the appointment on my own, but she didn't say it needed to be done in a certain amount of time. I guess I just don't understand how they would be able to tell anything 2 weeks after the fact.
I agree with pp...I can't imagine there not being any sense of urgency if there is a possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. I had 2 ectopic pregnancies (on seperate occasions) in which the fallopian tubes ruptured and the pain was INSANE...I don't know that an ectopic pregnancy just"goes away" but I'm not a professional. I would probably go to the emergency room if I didn't like my Dr's advice.
Good Luck
I could have written this post three years ago! One evening, I noticed a warm sensation spreading from the side of my abdomen to the middle and down. I had what felt like contractions for several hours. I bled for 13 days. My OB/GYN was dismissive with the situation and scheduled me for an u/s two weeks after the initial pain began. The OB/GYN thought it was a ruptured cyst as well, but my u/s showed another intact cyst on my ovary. As a side note, I only had one cyst in nearly two years of fertility tx, so they are not a common thing for me. The doctor never did any blood work. After experiencing an early m/c, I think that's what the initial incident was. That warming sensation and the nature of the pain/bleeding was very similar.
Of course, there is no way for me to know if it was a c/p, as I suspect. However, I so wish I had pushed my OB/GYN for blood work, as I think it would have made a difference in our treatment. The reason I mentioned this is I think it would be a good idea to push your doctor for an earlier appointment and more follow-up. It always shocks me to hear how OB/GYNs are so casual about things.

Thanks for the responses. I may call tomorrow and try to get an earlier appointment, but I think it's probably a ruptured ovarian cyst.
Ruthie, she wasn't very serious about it because my husband has had a vasectomy, but she said there was always a chance one little guy got through, or it reversed itself.
I think I was trying to convince myself that could have happened, and I guess I won't know with an ultrasound scheduled that far out. Yeah, I know it sounds dumb to think that could be the case, but she said it, not me. haha. On the other hand, I don't even know if they would be able to tell a cyst had ruptured two weeks later, but who knows.
