My poor little man had his MMR vaccine about 12 days ago. I was told that fever and rash could be part of the reaction. So he had a fever for the last couple days and a small rash (5% get the rash). Yesterday and today the rash has spread. It's covering his entire body including his face. He looks awful. I have a call in to his ped.
It just sucks because of course his appetite has been affected, too. We just can't get ahead. I had considered holding off on this vaccine for a little while since all of the diseases are very rare and because our family seems prone to autoimmune diseases (a caution on the MMR vaccine). We decided to go ahead because he'd need to get it eventually and because we believe in the importance of herd immunity. I'm regretting it now, though (this should probably be an FFFC).
Re: Bad vaccine reaction
Poor G!
I hope he feels better and gets his appetite back soon!
Poor little guy. Hope he feels better soon.
Isaac had a rash about 2 weeks after his last set of shots. It was pretty widespread on his belly. It only lasted a couple days. Thankfully it didn't spread farther than that though. I'm surprised that only 5% supposedly get a rash because I think at least 3 of my kids did.
I was surprised by the 5%, too, but it's been in every article I've read. maybe it's been awhile since they've updated that percentage.
Hope he feels better.
Did your doctor say it was a vaccine reaction? My LO had a rash a few of days after his last round of shots so I took him into the ped. Turns out it was erythema multiforme. It's a reaction the body has, usually to a virus. He said if it was a vaccine reaction, it would have happened right away. He said the key indicator it is EM is the splotches look like little targets. They are round at first, then grow together to become splotchy.
The good news for him was that it looks way worse than it really is and his went away within a couple of days. He wasn't itchy or anything.
Hope it all gets cleared up!
Your poor LO! My neighbor kid had the same thing.
Yes, the ped said its a reaction. The MMR vaccine is different because it's a weakened live virus so the reaction happens 7-28 days after vaccination (as if theyd been exposed to the real disease).
Oh no!! Poor G
That is awful and is super sucky that it affected his eating, too. I hope he feels better really soon!
There's nothing flameful about wishing G didn't have the reaction.
Out of curiosity did you get the traditional MMR or the MMRV (MMR plus varicella)? MMRV does have a higher chance of fever and rash side effects.
Either way, it sucks that G isn't feeling well. I hope it clears up quickly for your little man. Big non-itchy hugs for him!
BFP #2 5/27/12. EDD 2/1/13. m/c and D&C 6/21/12.
Just the MMR. They didn't offer me the MMRV. I wonder if this will affect how he reacts to future vaccines (assuming they're the live variety).
Oh No poor G! I hope he feels better soon. I'm sorry you have to go through this
Tb has a good point - you can't play the what-if game. Well you can, but you'll just drive yourself crazy.
Did you guys get into the pedi today?

Well, we did a delayed vax schedule, so I can't judge at all. And I'm so sorry G is having a reaction.
I often wonder what ifs about vax'ing, if I did some of them too early anyway.
There will never be a point when you don't question your actions. It's what helps you be a good mom.
We ended up just talking to the nurse. She wants us to give it a couple days. I think if she actually saw him, though, she would be shocked. It looks so so bad.
We are doing a delayed schedule, too. Which makes it all the worse because I really didn't want to go ahead with this vax. I waffled til the last minute. Ugh!
Oh, poor G!!!
Can anything be done for him? Jack has never had a bad reaction to a vaccine, just a fever, so I would be so freaked out!
As far as I understand we just have to wait it out. I am totally freaked out. And, really worried that he's going to develop more of the nasty reactions this vaccine can produce. I really hope it looks better tomorrow!
Me too, I'm so sorry that this happened to him, especially after you tried to protect him. T&P for him tonight. ?
Thank you!
