December 2010 Moms

Need TTC advice (...treats for those that help)

DH and I are "in negotiations" as he puts it about when to start TTC. We're thinking in the late late spring/early summer and hoping for a spring 2013 baby.

Some background: I got pregnant rather quickly last time...only took 2 months. Of course there are no guarantees for the second time around. I am a teacher and can take up to 2 years (unpaid) maternity leave. When DS I was going stir crazy and ready to go back to work by spring, but stayed home until September. No clue if I will feel the same way the second time around with two little ones to keep me on my toes :)))

DH would like to start trying in July/August - hoping for an April/May baby, then I'll go back to work in September. That would be fine with me, BUT it might not happen right away.

My thoughts are that we should start trying earlier rather than later...if it takes a while to conceive and it doesn't happen until lets say October, then I won't be due until July?? I wouldn't want to put my 6 week old in daycare to go back to teaching in September, so I'd want to stay home until January.  Not to mention how nearly impossible it would be to pump at work - and with an itty bitty one, I'd want to make sure BFing would work out as well as it did with DS,

Ahhhhhhhhh. Can't believe how much thought I'm putting into this.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Here's a cupcake!

  • I personaly would start trying sooner rather than later. And it's fun to try :)

  • TTC has too many variables.  I think it's near impossible to try to plan things.  I say, start getting busy now!  Stick out tongue

  • It's such a personal decision, but if I were in your shoes... I would start trying earlier rather than waiting. Good luck and have fun ;)

  • Since the 'teacher schedule' is so ideal for having babies, I would try for the spring, like your DH wants. Although I do agree with pp's that there's no guarantee that any amount of planning will actually work, I was lucky enough to 'plan' and get pg easily with both my DDs so I never wanted to try earlier than I would actually want a baby, KWIM?!! Good Luck!

  • I would TTC now...you don't know how long it will take and you are off this whole year already, right? It just makes more sense to me.

I have a similar, but almost opposite situation. I am starting a new job soon, and can't get maternity leave until I have been there for a year. So, we are going to start TTC in Sept to aim for a June or later baby. My preference would probably be June or July. I hope it doesn't take too long, but I really can't do it sooner or I will be SOL with the leave.

  • You know, I think you should just try when you want and see what happens.  And you know what? If you get pregnant in October and end up with the July baby, you go back to work in January.  I used to think that was a big deal, until I realized that the kids really do not care if you are there or not (it was a big blow to my ego, trust me).  They do the work with the leave replacement, and they do the work with you when you come back: NBD!

If this pregnancy works out, I'll be back for just the month of September, take leave, then go back to work in April...not Ideal, maybe, but also not the end of the world. The kids and parents and administration will just have to deal.

What Jilly said.  Conversely, if you start trying now & miss the last part of the school year, same logic applies.

  • I would try not to overthink it.  You might get pregnant the first month or it might take you a year - you never know.  If you know you want another baby then go for it.  It will happen when it happens, and it will work out whether the baby is born in December or June.  Good luck.

  • I say start trying!! You never know how long it could take! And like others said its fun!
