TTC after 35

OK, need advice but don't know which board to post (TTGPR)

So, backstory - I'm turning 37 in 15 minutes.  We want #2.  I have a significant loss history, 14 pregnancies with 13 m/c, the latest term was 10 weeks (after h/b seen/heard with the twins) & 12 weeks (no h/b confirmed.)   We met with our midwife after our D&C for just a check-up, and she actually talked to us for quite a bit.  She questioned if we went in for any testing before.  We were going to, but then we got pregnant with P, and that was that.  She recommended a few OBs, and we have an appointment next week.  Phew, long backstory, sorry!

So, now we have our appointment next week, and I don't know what to do/ask.  I don't want to sit there & nod my head like a bobble.  We talked about tons of things with the MW (genetic testing, etc.) but I'm wondering if I should do some  other standard AMA tests.  Any advice about what I should request, watch for, stay away from, etc. would be much appreciated.

  • First off I'm so sorry for your losses, I can't imagine going through all of those.

Are you seeing an OB or an RE?  Reason I ask is I'm not sure a regular OB's office can run all the panel of tests that an RE's office typically does.  In addition to genetic testing, they will test for various blood clotting disorders that may contribute to miscarriages and a bunch of other tests I can't remember off the top of my head right now.  I would also get your AMH level tested.  I'm assuming you have had FSH, LH, TSH, and E2 done for CD3 tested, but if not, those would be good to run also.  Good luck!

ETA:  If not included in the above tests, I would ask them to run tests for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).

I will start at an OB, and they can refer me out to the UW for some testing or an RE as well.  I doubt the OB will feel the need to keep me & treat me if it's not in his realm, but I do need a referal before I can go elsewhere.

Thanks for the info - I have not had ANY of those tests done.  We were going to start testing but then had our DD, so that didn't happen.

  • If your OB hasn't even run the standard tests for recurrent loss after 13 m/c, it's probably time to seek out a specialist and possibly a new OB. If there is something obvious that can be corrected, you could have been spared all the heartbreak.

Mrs. Nukem gave you a great rundown of what to ask for. You might want prolactin checked as well.

I hope you can get to the bottom of this.

Oh, if I was seeing the same person, I totally would!  The losses were spread out over many years  different practitioners.  We had switched to this insurance/group of docs just a few years ago.  We had started down the testing path, but got derailed.  We had gone as far as SA and scheduling an HSG.  The MW is actually pro-active about it & wants us to start the process ASAP, which we will.

Many of my losses were prior to my marriage to DH.  In March, we will have been married 4 years.

This is my thought as well.  I think after 2 or 3 miscarriages, they should have done this for you.

ETA: Sorry, never mind, just saw your response above.

Oh, thank goodness you followed up with an explanation. I was outraged for you by my original interpretation. I'm glad that your current practitioners are on top of things.

  • OK, I seriously love the passion you guys have!  Smile  Thanks for trying to make sure everyone is taken care of properly.  I'm so lucky to have found such a great group of women.
