Our Valentine's Day baby (birth story & pics)

Our little Valentine's Day baby, Zoe Lucille, arrived last Tue, 2/14 at 12:34 am.

Her due date was Feb 13 and, although I'd had early labor on-and off for a couple of weeks, things were very quiet that day.  It was my first day at home without having to work. I went to pick L up from school at 4 and came home and made a really nice dinner and right in the middle of dinner, at about 6:40pm, my water broke.

We got the last minute things together and were out the door by about 7pm. My contractions started picking up and were coming every 3-4 minutes.

We met my SIL near the hospital at around 7:15 and gave our little guy a huge hug and a kiss and headed off to the hospital. I was admitted to the hospital at 7:30pm, and was only 3cm, 50% effaced. I started walking around the hospital at 9:40pm and my contractions started getting pretty painful and were about 3min apart. At 10:30 they checked me and I was only 4cm and 70% effaced.

The nurse had me walk around for another 10 or so minutes but my contractions started getting too painful for me to handle and were coming every 1-1.5 minutes so I requested the epidural at 11:00pm. I felt I was going to be in for a long night and wanted to settle into bed and get some rest.

My doctor arrived at around midnight (she was on call so it took her awhile to get to the hospital after I'd been admitted). She checked me and since I hadn't been checked since 10:30, I didn't expect that I had progressed too much. So you can imagine the shock on my face when she said that I was already fully dilated and effaced at that it was time to push!

She briefly left the room to gather all of the necessary paperwork and to get the rest of the team into the room for the baby's birth. My nurse asked me to do a couple of "practice pushes" at 12:15, but on push two she asked me to stop pushing because the baby's head had crowned and said that we needed to wait for the doctor to get back.

My OB arrived at 12:20am and gently glided the baby out with each contraction (no more pushing) and Zoe just came out on her own. She was born at 12:24am, 7lb, 6oz, 19.5".

I had an amazing experience this time and didn't tear at all so healing has gone amazing compared to my last birth experience. Zoe had a mile case of jaundice but is doing much better now. She looks a lot like her big brother and he is in love with her already, as are we.
