probiotics and grapefuit extract for diaper rash

DS had never had diaper rash until he was sick recently and I was having a terrible time trying to get it to clear up even with lots of dry bum time. I called the pediatrician and he said to give DS probiotic suppliments and wipe his bum with water with a couple drops of grapefruit seed extract. The probiotics help the poo be less irritating and prevent yeast infection, and the grapefruit extract also helps prevent yeast. This did wonders for us I have read several diaper rash and yeast posts recently, and I just thought this may help someone. I know I am new around here, so this may be common knowledge or have been posted before. Sorry if it's a repeat.

Re: probiotics and grapefuit extract for diaper rash

  • We haven't tried grapefruit seed extract but the probiotics worked very well for my LO (also recommended by our pedi for diarrhea and wicked diaper rash).  I will have to get some GSE - it sounds like it's pretty fantastic.  I don't hear many people talking about using probiotics and I don't know why - they are great!

  • I used probiotics when LO was on amoxicillin for an ear infection. I had heard horror stories of antibiotics-caused diaper rashes, but either he isn't prone to that or the probiotics worked! We saw no signs of rash. The bottle says to mix with food or lukewarm milk or formula. I mixed it with his food (purees) since he only gets bottles at daycare and I didn't want them to have to change how they warm them up.

This is what I was thinking. I figured if L or I had to g on antibiotics I would ask about probiotics then. So you dont give them daily, just when needed?

I don't give them daily.  I used them while he was sick and having bad amoxicillin diarrhea and yeast infection.  Then I continued for a day or 2 after everything cleared up just to be safe. I guess you could use them all the time if you wanted.  It would be like eating yogurt everyday.

I do use grapefuit seed extract in his wipe solution all the time though.  It smells delicious and I don't feel comfortable with using TTO all the time.
