Does your LO drink water?

We introduced the sippy cup when we started solids, but DD isn't really into it. On a good day, she'll drink maybe .5 oz of water. On average, she eats 2 oz of cereal + 1 oz of veggie or fruit per day. Not a lot, but I definitely expected it to be enough to make her to drink more water by now.

So out of curiosity, how much water does your LO drink?

Re: Does your LO drink water?

  • We offer water once he's finished his daily allotment of prune juice (for the poops!). I offer him a 2.5 oz bottle of water and he usually drinks about half of it over the course of the day.

  • We're not actually worried about water intake, no need to. We just give him the sippy, sometimes he drinks it other times he just throws it on the floor. I'm more into getting him used to cups than actual intake.

  • Yes, he drinks maybe a few ounces a day. Our pedi recommended Super Baby Foods book for a guideline on solids and it suggests that once they begin with solids that they need a little water to help flush the kidneys. We started by just putting a little water in his spoon but now he drinks out of his sippy cup. He loves drinking from my water jug even more than his sippy.

  • I give him his sippy every afternoon with some puffs. He drinks about and ounce.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • We offer a teeny bit in an open cup.  She obviously neds help with this but she loves water.  She maybe takes 2-3oz over the course of 3 meals

  • Our pedi said we could give her a little bit of apple juice, about half/half with water. So that's what we do, and I give her about a finger's width at the bottom of the sippy, sometimes 2x a day, not always. Sometimes she drinks it and sometimes she doesn't. It's more about the cup practice than the intake for us here.

  • No water here. Pedi didn't say anything about it, and I didn't ask. P won't take a bottle, or a sippy cup, and refuses all the solids we have tried.

  • anything more than BM is just for fun and practice right now for DS. When I drink water and am holding him he always wants a sip, so I'll give it to him - and b/c he likes this I've gotten out a sippy cup for him to drink water from on occasion. It's not much at all, and not daily.

My Pedi doesn't really think we need to worry too much about getting DS anything more than BM until in between 9-12 months, so I'm pretty relaxed about introducing new things right now.

  • He gets his sippy cup with solids.  He loves drinking through the straw one.  He has never really even swallowed half an ounce, from what I can tell.  He mostly sucks in and out, in and out backwashing into the cup and having fun with it.  I can tell he gets excited when the water hits his tongue though.  You don't have to worry that they get *enough* water while they're getting BM or formula though.  It's just for fun and to help flush the solids down, etc

DD's dr. told me not to worry about water for awhile. So I don't! Her beverage is still just BM and will continue to be that for awhile. FWIW, I've been letting her learn/play with a sippy cup nightly when she has her solids that has the teeniest bit of water in it. She doesn't get hardly any of it out of the cup but she sure has fun trying to use it!

This. I put a couple oz in but I don't think she's ever gotten anything. She chews on the sippy instead of sucking.

  • I have given DS water a couple times in a sippy.  He drinks it like its going out of style or that he hasn't drank any BM all day Hmm He has also grabbed his cousins sippy and started drinking her water.  He really has only had water maybe a handfull of times.  Maybe I should leave his sippy out so if he is thirsty he can have a little!

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies. My pedi said to introduce water at the same time as solids - I just wasn't sure if DD was supposed to really be drinking any of it by now.
