I read in one of my baby books that you shouldn't eat these things...Has anyone else heard this? If so, do we know why??? Tuna salad or egg salad sounds awfully good right about now! 2 weeks ago I was craving tacos, then hamburgers, now grilled cheese sandwiches
Re: Tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad...?
Well I am a little unsure when it comes to egg or chicken, but I do know that you can only eat tuna rarely(like maybe once a week). This is the same with most all seafood due to the mercury in it.

The main concern is about the mayonnaise involved. Not only is it the most vile, evil, stomach turning creation in existence (okay, so maybe this is a biased reply), but people freak out over raw eggs and whether or not it has "gone bad."
As long as the mayonnaise isn't homemade, it's going to be pasteurized, and we just have to use good judgement on whether or not something is fresh. With tuna, we want to stick mostly with light tuna as opposed to albacore (although both are fine), and we want to limit it to only a couple servings a week. Or so they say!
I admit to loving tuna salad if I can't tell that there's any mayonnaise in it. The second I see the mayonnaise or--god forbid--taste it, my week is ruined. I've actually started crying while telling someone how much I hate the stuff!

If you make them at home, there is no issue.
There is a listeria risk in store made salads such as ham salad, chicken salad, egg salad, etc. Listeria is a type of bacteria that can be very serious to pregnant women and their babies. Since pregnant women are 20 times more likely to be affected by listeria than non-pregnant healthy adults, the recommendation is to avoid the foods most often contaminated with it. Even so, listeriosis is very rare.
Here's the recommendation by the FDA. https://foodsafety.gov/keep/groupofpeople/pregnant/chklist_pregnancy.html
And here's some info about listeria if you are curious:

Egg and chicken should be fine, since it's hardboiled eggs so the yolks are cooked through. I can't see any other reason why it would be a "red flag" on the egg salad. Chicken salad, I really can't think of any reason whatsoever. I check everything on americanpregnancy.org
I have never, ever liked it, but in the past 10 years or so my hatred has intensified, so it has nothing to do with pregnancy! I actually like Miracle Whip since it has a completely different taste, but I can't look at it or else it'll gross me out.

Now I am, too! I haven't had egg salad for years and it sounds delicious.
