Cloth Diapering

New to cloth diapers

Hi everyone!

I bought cloth diapers for my DD before she was born with the idea of using them as soon as she was out of her newborn diapers.  She was born preemie and is now FINALLY starting to outgrow her newborn disposables.  I am bit nervous to move forward with the cloth diapers since I havent been using them at all yet.

We have the bum genius elemental all in one. Anyone have good suggestions as to how to wash and care for them? I have read up on it a bunch, but still not sure.  I currently use dreft for her clothes... Im in NJ so winters will be hard to line dry...

Also anyone have any good techniques for cleaning the poopy diapers?

Im excited to start using them, just want to do it the best way possible.

thanks!

Re: New to cloth diapers

  • Dreft is a no-no. The FAQ has a link to CD safe detergents

The FAQ also has a basic wash routine. Cold rinse (no detergent), hot wash/cold rinse cycle (with detergent), cold rinse (no detergent). You can line dry indoors, or some people machine dry. It just may shorten the life of the diaper.

EBF or EFF poo diapers can go straight in the washer. Once they start solids you have options including disposable liners, scraping, dunk and swish, or diaper sprayers

I just wanted to add that line drying in the winter is possible! We line dry all of our prefolds, shells, and hemp inserts and machine dry wipes fleece liners, and microfiber. After they dry (after about 6-8 hrs on a cold day), I fluff them in the dryer for 15 minutes to soften them up. Just a suggestion if you want to protect your elastic/PUL (and be eco friendly)!

We line dry everything with PUL all year round as well. There are a lot of folding drying racks that you can buy and use in the winter or when the weather doesn't co operate!

  • On the main CDing page there is a little green banner at the top. On the top right of that banner is a link to the FAQ's. To save you time: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=48640290#48640290

  • I love our BG elementals. Great diapers. I agree with the above posts, check out the faqs. That should help. Don't use Dreft. Prewash cold, full cycle wash on hot/cold then cold rinse. You can hang them to dry inside no problem or dry on low in the dryer! Good luck! Big Smile
