s/o: What kind of student were you?

Will anyone here admit to being less than a straight A and B student, LOL?

I was mostly a B-C-D student for most of my life. I think I'm fairly bright (not a genius for sure, but certainly not slow either) but didn't apply myself well. FWIW, I had a pretty tumultuous and abusive childhood so I think that all of the home life issues really made it difficult for me to do as well as I should have done.  It's likely that if I'd grown up in a different household with different values and priorities I'd have been a much better student.

What kind of a student were you?

Re: s/o: What kind of student were you?

  • missed half my junior and senior year.. and only got C's because I had to in order to be on the Swim team and soccer (which my coaches were some of my teachers)

  • I was a big dork and got mostly A's and B's.  In college, it was a different story my first year...straight C's.  Oops :)

  • As and an occasionaly A-.  I rarely did homework outside of school and barely studied.  However...I got Cs and Ds until 7th grade, then one day it just clicked I didn't like the scummy kids I was in class with and decided that was it I was going to put forth  some effort.

I didn't do as well in college though, partially because of the difficulty, partially because I didn't always do my best job balancing bar night and school.  And I still hated doing homework outside of the classroom.

  • I had a solid B average, so nothing stellar.  And, in that average there were some A's and C's, even some D's from time to time.

ETA: I was a slacker student, too.  So, I hope that I can help my kids not be like that.  I was so careless and carefree about things like spelling and turning in homework.  That's just a dumb way to get bad grades, IMO.

  • I was a good student.  I made two C's in college, one I completely deserve based on lack of effort and one was just a little prick who was on a power trip (luckily, it was a 2 hour class, not a regular one, which was 5 hours.).  I always did well enough to get to the next school.  I mostly made A's in grad school.
  • lol, I got a 2.84 in highschool :).  I did great the first two years and then slacked and skipped school a lot.

Then I started working full-time and started college and finished my AA with a 3.7.  Maybe not the greatest, but much better than my highschool days.

  • I've said before that I got great grades and graduated high in my class.  But I would never describe myself as a good student.  I did my work, but I did the bare minimum of studying and I'm not really proud of that.

I got by getting good grades because I was lucky that if I paid attention in class that is really all I needed to study - and did my homework.

Honestly, now, and then, I would have preferred to read any book over do anything for school.  I used to get in trouble for reading a book under my desk in class.

  • All A's and missed being the valedictorian to another girl...also named Renae  (stupid spelling though)...who took one more AP class than I did...I instead chose to leave class early...we could leave if we had open periods at the end of the day.

College--Mostly A's...a handful of B's....mostly my senior year when I was getting burnt out of school and just wanted to graduate.

  • I was mostly a B-C student with some D's thrown in on math and science. I was great in reading/lit and history and awful in math.science.

To be honest, I had horrible study habits. I just didn't like to do it. My brothers and sisters are insanly intelligent and I joke around to them that I have to bring them back down to earth. They have no street sense, where I have a lot.

I hope DD gets DH's study habits. I'm thankful that I graduated HS and college for that matter.

  • I didn't care enough to try in high school or college.  Both, I was a B/C student.  I worked hard enough to play ball.
  • Ha, eclaires, reading books under my desk- that was *totally* me.

There were several years in elementary school (3-5 grades) where I refused to do any work. I refused to do homework and when my parents forced me to do it I'd throw it away at school instead of turning it in. Anyhow, I didn't even want to do in-class assignments so I'd sit there and read my grandma's Danielle Steel romance novels instead. They would get confiscated and I was never allowed to go out for recess because I had so much missing work. I had to stay in and catch up on work, but instead I used that time to steal more books from other kids' desks and from the library. Books were totally my drug of choice, LOL. They were without question my way of escaping from reality.

  • I got A's & B's in high school, but I wasn't a very good student.  I never really tried that hard.  That translated to me struggling hard core in college!

  • I was a mostly B's student in high school.  I could have done better, but I didn't care.  My first two years of college were better than that, but the 3rd year, I burned out and dropped out.  I'm back in college again and doing MUCH better.
  • Oh, in high school I sucked. LOL

I was a National Merit scholar, great ACT and SAT scores, won awards for the newspaper, and couldn't really have cared less about my grades. I failed Phys Ed, for crying out loud, and got kicked out of AP English because I "wasn't taking it seriously enough". I almost didn't graduate because I took off a month of my senior year and went to Paris with my aunt. I didn't make up much if any of the work.

Once I hit college, it took my freshman year to get over that attitude, and I ended up graduating with a 3.5.

  • Cleo - we have Danielle Steel in common!  I was always getting caught with a romance novel under my desk in elementary school.  Hahaha.

I actually did have a stretch in 4th grade when I refused to do any math at all.  I think I got a D and had to do extra credit.  I started to do better once I hit 5th/6th grade, but still snuck around to read whenever I could.

I had a rough time w/ my parents divorce and subsequent remarriages around that time and I think that was part of it.  I really try to be careful with my reading habit.  My bio-dad used to just ignore us and read non-stop.  I try to keep myself in check b/c I do not want to be like him at all.  He treated us like we didn't exist and would just read.  I have the ability to tune everything out and read, which is good as far as studying or ignoring siblings, not so much w/ my own child.

  • I was always the A student. But I think my case was a bit weird, though, because since very early grade school, I?ve been in the ?advanced? classes, so everyone around me, and all my friends, were in the same boat. In junior high, we were sequestered from the ?general population,? if you will, so we had very little contact with them. My high school was a specialized high school where you needed to be screened to get in. All of this seemed normal to me. It wasn?t until I hit college where I saw that a lot of people?s school experiences were not like mine at all.

As for homework, I did it in school most of the time. We fulfilled most or our requirement early so we had a lot of extra periods with free time. Most of the classes I took my  junior or senior years were college courses--our high school was on a campus. For tests, very little studying. I found taking really good, thorough notes, and participating in class, helped retain the info.

In other areas, too. I?d never been to a house party or anything like that. Almost all my friends lived in apartments, and we grew up in the city so we were always out doing things. If we wanted to drink, we did, in someone?s house or our at a bar or club. I thought keggers, or throwing a party when your parents were away, was only in movies or on tv.

  • Eclaires- Yep, Danielle Steel and VC Andrews, LOL. Oh, and those Harlequin romance paperbacks that I could always find at neighborhood garage sales for a dime each.

I understand what you mean about having to keep your reading in check because I tend to be the same way, even to this day. Lately I've been averaging 2-3 books a week but I mostly read those when I'm at work. I've also been watching my time online because I think that I often tend to do the same thing with reading on the computer.

  • Ah, I love VC Andrews.  I read a lot of Danielle Steel, Jude Deveraux, Judith McNaught, Nora Roberts and the like.

Yeah, same here - I can get really focused and I just ignore.  I really have to keep it in check.  I've been back to reading a few books a week, but I tend to read after J's in bed or before he gets up in the morning.  I don't let myself sit down and read during the day.  I try to limit the computer too when he's up, naptime is good nesting time, since I can do some housework and check in here, too.  I would read a book the entire naptime, so nesting is better suited for this time block, lol.

It's great I can tune out distractions, but my kid should not be a distraction, LOL!

  • I had virtual straight As in Jr. High.  Mainly an A-B student in all Honors/Advanced classes in HS.  I did slip in a couple Cs in Advanced Chemistry (which I hated).  In college mostly As & Bs.  In Grad school mostly As.  I was the type that did not study nor do much homework.  I was a total crammer when it came to tests & projects.  I am one of those annoying people who did well w/ little effort.  If I had actually been more serious & diligent, I would have had straight As most of the time.  I often got the highest in my classes in standardized tests & it'd piss my teachers off because I did not live up to my potential.  I have some regrets but on the other hand & had a very nice, fun, social school experience & it wasn't all about grades.
