Spitting Up?

My LO is just under 3 weeks old. We're doing a combination of breastfeeding and formula but it's mostly formula now. I generally feed her about 2 oz every 2-3 hours. I'm not sure if this is enough as I'm a FTM but I feed on demand. However, she'll drink the 2 oz then cry like she's still hungry so I give her an oz more. Then she spits up everywhere like I overfed her. Then acts hungry again. I don't know what to do now or how much to feed her. At her last dr appt, she was gaining weight fine and was back up to birth weight. But now I'm just confused. My husband tells me to give her less so she won't spit up so much but then she's just hungry! I really don't know what to do and would appreciate any advice. :'(

Re: Spitting Up?

  • I'm EBFing, but I'm having the same issue. Up until yesterday DS was able to eat on one breast, I'd change him, and then eat on the other. Suddenly its like he eats too much on the first one, spits up, and then doesnt want the second one. Not sure what to do in either case. Looking forward to hearing what advice you get.

  • I would call yoru pediatrician.  When our baby starting spitting up a lot, the nurse we met with said that we may want to feed less.  However, because I breastfeed, that's impossible.  Depending on how much your baby is spitting up, she may have reflux, which could be treated with zantac.
  • I would try burping her in the middle of the feed to see if that helps alleviate the spit up. If she still seems hungry than give her the other ounce. Some spit up is normal. If she spis up ounces at a time that isn't normal.
