Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

what are you feeding your 15 month old?

i need some new ideas for finger foods. DD is kind of picky. she wont puree's anymore unless i let her hold the spoon and feed herself, but not much of it actually makes it into her mouth. she won't let me feed her. i try to give her what we're eating but she is picky. not too into chicken. she'll occasionally eat what we're having. she loves grilled cheese. and waffles. we're just having trouble mostly with dinner. apparently she'll eat whatever they put in front of her at daycare, probably because she sees the other kids eating it. but she is picky at home.

so any suggestions for finger foods? what are your LO's favorites?

Re: what are you feeding your 15 month old?

  • Just keep offering her what you eat. And let her feed herself with a spoon - greek yogurt (you can make your own by draining regular yogurt with a cheesecloth set in a strainer) is thicker, so it's easier for them to handle. I also make pureed prunes for DS2 (he has poop issues!), and those really thicken yogurt. He also loves oatmeal mixed with prunes, peanut butter and a little milk.

With things like soups, I give DS2 the chunks out of it, but not as much broth as the rest of us eat. Avocado, canned fish, deli meats, cheese slices, fruit or veggie slices are all great things.

The book "How to get your kid to eat" by Ellyn Satter is a great read, she has really good advice about taking the pressure off of how much your kid is eating. hth

  • She is picky and also isn't a big eater.  She'll always eat bread/toast or cheerios.  She also loves fruit-cut up banana, cantaloupe, etc.  She loves yogurt and shredded cheese.

Everything else is hit or miss, but we still cut up what we're eating and have her try it!

Keep offering what you eat. She is picky at home because at daycare she eats what they have or nothing. You giving her choices. My DS is 14 months. He eats what we do or not.
This.  Stop making it so hard on yourself & let your kid grow up.  (not meaning this rudely, honest!)

My kid's favorite thing is gnocchi with pesto.  She will choose this over a PB&J.  Srsly.  And she will shun chicken nuggs, but scarf down roasted chicken, steamed veggies, avocado chunks, etc for dinner, no problem.

  • DD loves cheese quesadillas, peanut butter toast, cinnamon raisin English muffins, macaroni and cheese, bananas, apples, grapes ( cut up of course), pears, peas, corn, broccoli with cheese, turkey burger with ketchup, pasta with meat sauce, yogurt, cheese.

  • DO let her feed herself.  It'll be messy but she has the desire so let her learn.  Cottage cheese is a good thing to start with because the texture makes it less likely to slide off the spoon.   Aiden is picky at home too but we have a few tricks.  Quesadillas work well for hiding chicken and some veggies, same thing with some kind of stuffed pasta like ravioli.  We also let him dip stuff in ranch, ketchup or whatever.  I swore I wouldn't have a dipper but he eats a lot more that way.  Also, try preparing things differently than maybe you're used to.  I like steamed broccoli but it turns out he'll only eat it roasted with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.  We add taco seasoning to his eggs because he likes a little more heat than I do - I like my eggs plain.  See what she DOES like and think about what makes up those foods and how you can carry it over to other things.

  • Amelia's also kind of picky right now, especially with meat. She'll eat chicken if it's cut into tiny pieces, like we would feed her 5 or so months ago, and soak it in Italian dressing. She likes deli meat and turkey dogs, but I don't offer those often. We offered her salmon a few times this week, but she never ate it.

She also loves almost any fruit or vegetable. I'll either give them fresh in small pieces or steam them (or bake sweet potatoes & squash).

She likes cheese quesadillas or plain whole wheat tortillas too. I do make homemade waffles, which she loves, but I'll add some yogurt and banana pieces to the mix to make it a little better. Right now I don't have wheat flour, but I usually use that when we have it.

We just continue to offer her the things that she refuses. Eventually maybe she'll like them!

OH! She hasn't been eating much lately and would rather nurse most of the time, so I've been making smoothies for her to have between meals. They're easy and she loves them! We change it up every day. Today I made a simple strawberry (frozen), banana and milk one and she loved it! Last week, I used banana, yogurt, milk, kiwi, and spinach. It's a good way, for kids or adults, to get the nutrition of spinach without the texture or taste.

I also add spinach to her scrambled eggs.

Sorry it's so long and piece-y, but I HTH!

This! I'm not sure if that's what you meant, OP, but it sounds like you don't want her to feed herself? We stopped purees a long time ago, around 9 months or so, because she was happy to feed herself. It's a good motor activity and they enjoy it!

  • Does your DD have utensils to use herself? If not, start there, and let her have at it.

  • DS has some favorites...avocado, strawberries, blueberries, green beans, cheese, & sweet potatoes.  He loves feeding himself so that has been key for us.
