Swing to Crib Transition...

OMG- I never thought it would be this hard to get my baby girl to sleep in her crib!  DD is 6 days old and has been attached to her swing.  It's the only place she will sleep!  Any suggestions on how to transition her to her crib...or even her pack n' play?

Re: Swing to Crib Transition...

  • I would say let her sleep there for now.  I wish I could get DS to at least sleep in his swing rather than insisting on being in my arms.  I consider you lucky to be able to put her down at all.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  • Ha ha! My Lo is 12 weeks old today and still sleeps primarily in her swing. Do what you need to to rest and recover imo.

I'm right there with ya. Mine is 3 1/2 weeks and will not sleep anywhere else but in my arms.

  • Have you tried daytime naps in the crib? My DD is almost 8wks. She sleeps in the swing at night 6-8hr straight. I put her down for naps in the crib. She has never slept more than an hour in the crib.

  • My DS still sleeps in the swing.  I say at 6 days old get the sleep any way you can.  We are starting to put him in his crib each night but we only get an hour or so.  We are hoping those stretches start to become longer but we are not worried at this point.

  • Thanks everyone!  I have started trying the day time naps in the crib, but I think most of you are right in that I just need to let her sleep.  I guess I was having unreal expectations!  Thanks for the reality check!!

  • Our LO will sleep in his swing during the nights and he is 8 weeks old.  He will only nap in the crib on his tummy or back if he is completely out.  DH's idea is to let him sleep in the swing until he out grows it and then DS will have to sleep in the crib no matter what.  DS also loves to fall asleep in our arms after a feeding.

  • Both my kiddos slept in a cradle swing due to reflux. DS is still in his swing - anything you can do to get them to sleep at this point is worth it!

With DD we transitioned out of the swing at around 12 weeks. For the "4th trimester" they really do well with movement and by 12 weeks their sleep is more organized and it is easier for them to stay asleep generally.

To transition out of the swing we did stages:

    1. Start by putting LO to sleep in the swing with it moving. Once LO is asleep, turn the swing off. Do this for a couple of nights.

    2. Put LO down in the swing with it off. Do this for a couple nights.

    3. Put LO down in the crib. Revert to swing if necessary for your own sanity, but keep trying the crib first after each waking.

They will eventually sleep in the crib! Good luck :-)
