Baby with cut I can't get to heal

My LO is 12 months old.  She has sensitive and dry skin.  I keep her well lotioned and she does fine.  However her thumbs and fingers have gotten very dry and the soft part of her thumb her skin has cracked.  It looks very painful.  It doesn't seem to bother her, but it's very rough and looks painful and I don't want to get an infection in it.  I've tried to keep extra lotion on it and aquaphor at night, but it seems to be getting worse if anything.  She does not suck her thumbs, she chews on her other fingers occassionally as she is teething.  At her age I don't want to use a band-aid because I am afraid of the choking hazard.  Does anyone have a good idea on how to put something on it that will stay on and is not an ingestion hazard?

  • Have you tried asking the pharmacist what they recommend over the counter? Otherwise, take her in to the pedi if it doesn't get better and starts to bother her.

  • Not sure if it's safe, but how about that liquid band aid stuff?

  • I would use some natural preservative free lotion or balm. Not sure if I can mention it here but HomeStylebathandbody.com does custom requests, thats where I get my baby's lotion. They have regular lotions with simple ingredients, that are all okay to ingest (besides the fragrance oil which doesn't taste too good). But they do special requests all the time, just contact them. :) Best of luck!
  • Maybe try using aquaphor to keep skin mosturized after you clean it. I am not sure if you could try using liquid bandage, or if that could be choking hazard.

  • I've been trying aquaphor, doesn't seem to be helping, I think she rubs it off too much.  The things I've read about the liquid bandage are not good, especially if she tries to chew on it, and with her sensitive skin I'm also afraid it would cause problems

  • I'm suprised no one has mentioned that it can be Excema or Dermatitis.  I would have the Pedi look at it and possibly get a referral to a Pediatric Dermatologist if it continues to be a problem.  My Mom has this and has had issues with it since she was a baby.
