Pre-School and Daycare

Please recommend your LO non-Croc summer shoes.

I'm looking for shoes/sandals for DS in the spring/summer.  He's normally in Crocs, but they're not allowed at school.  We enrolled him in summer camp, which is a lot of water play.  We had him in Keens last summer which we loved, but I'm not sure if the fabric upper would be comfortable if they're wet for that long?  Or will it dry fast enough?

Are there any other good, closed toe sandal good for water play?

  • Ditto the Keens.  They aren't cheap but are worth it.  DD loved them and it was great that they are closed toed.

You could do keen sandals. They are good and fit will, though they got kind of stinky by the end of summer.

Will the dry fast enough? The ones we had last summer were fabric uppers.

They said there were a lot of tripping and falling during outside play and that they would always come off.  I guess it's true since that's what happens with DS.

  • Keens!  They hold up so well.

  • They are not closed toe but they work great for my little guy during the summer---Baby Gap's "playground shoes".  They used to be called "water shoes".

  • Kohl's has cute ones from Jumping Beans and I think they're 50% off right now.

If you're ordering online use promo code HUGS20 for another 20% off :)

  • We have done Keens for my girls the last few summers and they hold up great.  I know they have different kinds so look around for the ones that are designed to get wet.  You can also ask at camp if they can bring separate water shoes for the times that they will be getting wet.  They make some really great and sturdy water shoes.

Many schools/camps do not allow crocs.  They are not safe, they come off easily especially when the kids do not wear the back strap.  Neither of my girls schools allow them.

  • DD lived in Saltwaters last summer and they do make closed toe styles but they are still open. Link since that may not make sense.

They held up well, better than any of her other shoes, but I don't know about being constantly in the water. Her pre-school requires "water shoes" that we purchased at Target for water play and they have to change shoes when they come back inside.

I run a home daycare and I cringe when the kids come in crocs during the summer. I'll let DS wear them when we are out and about, but for outside play it's a nightmare. They are always falling and getting hurt.

  • I love these from PediPed. DS wears these to school and they are water safe/washable. I use them when they have water day at school and as summer sandals for everyday wear.

They have them in multiple colors. I usually get him a brown pair and a blue pair.

  • My girls had the ones from Kohls that the PP talked about. The lived in them last summer getting them wet all the time. I just bought them new ones yesterday for this summer. It has been a very mild winter here in FL and we are going to probably be wearing them all non-school days starting in a week or so I am sure. I usually start going to the beach in the beginning on March as long as it is not raining.

I did have to throw them away at the end of the summer because they had started to smell, but I was fine with that. They were worn very hard and I got my money out of them. I also have crocs for the girls to wear around the house in the yard. But when we go to local parks I like them to have a better shoe for climbing, the crocs tend to make them trip when they are running sometimes and they do fall of a lot.

  • Maybe something from Teva? DD had some good Teva sandals last summer, but her pair had open toes.

  • My vote is for Keens too, we buy them every year after finding out how awesome they are for summer/water shoes.
