This kid will not walk.

Alexander is so content being a speedy crawler! I feel like he almost has no reason to walk.  He doesn't even seem to want to!  Anyone have any tips for encouraging him to at least try?

Just to fill you in on all the details, he will walk if we hold his hands up (but he often buckles his knees to get down and crawl if he wants to go somewhere) and he can cruise around everything.  He even uses a side table we have as a walker!

Re: This kid will not walk.

  • This sounds like my LO exactly, up until a week ago.  Now he's walking like crazy and loves it!  I seriously felt just like you do, like he didn't care and he was content crawling.  We just walked him while holding his hands a lot, plus we tried to hold things up and out of his reach to encourage him to walk.  All of the sudden, he just seemed to decide he wanted to walk more and just started doing it.  He's getting pretty good now... we took him to the school football field this morning and he walked a good 1/4 of the way across it (chasing a bird, no less!).

  • Avery was standing up unsupported for almost 2 months before she took any steps. Some babies will take off running as soon as they can pull up, and other babies won't walk until they can do it perfectly. Alex is just cautious.

This is a good word to describe him. He walks sooo carefully even when he cruises.  I think he has fallen like, 2 times total because he is so careful.  The weird thing is he likes to climb and he is completely not careful as he does that!

  • Have you seen the joopy walker?

I have one that we never used.  I would be happy to mail it to you if you think it would help.  FWIW I think Alexander will walk when he feels like it.n

  • My friend's LO finally walked just shy of 18 months after months and months of being content to crawl or walk while holding onto just one finger.

  • You're not alone...Sam is a cautious one too.

She will walk a few steps from the couch to me, but she totally analyzes it first. If she is not sure, then it won't happen. lol She's an awesome cruiser and crawler just like Alex. Maybe 1 day before Kindergarten she will walk. lol

Jonny was like this up until a week or so before he turned 14 months old. He was very careful and cautious and would only walk while holding onto our hands/fingers. It was literally like a switch went off in his head and he realized, "Hey, I can do this".

And now within the past few days he's learned to "fake" falling onto his butt just so DH or I will say "Woah!" and then he starts laughing hysterically. I was just telling DH and it's so funny considering less than a month ago he was hyterically crying if he fell down.

  • Sounds like Isaac as well.  He loves walking around if I hold his hands, but he isn't interested in walking to one of us.  He likes pushing things around too.  When I get impatient wanting him to walk, I try to remind myself that soon I won't get to watch him crawl around which is so cute.

  • We are in the same boat.  I feel like he doesn't even want to walk because he can crawl faster.  I know it will happen but I feel like it is taking forever.

  • Elliot was just like that until about a month ago.  I finally got him to take a couple steps, but he still wasn't very interested.  He could just crawl so fast that I don't think he felt the need to walk.  He finally just took off one day.  I would say that your little guy will just do it on his own time.

At his one year check-up, our pedi said not to stress that he wasn't walking (I really wasn't anyway) because it is perfectly normal for some kids not to walk until well after a year.

Same thing here! He just started walking on Friday. He waited and he's really steady and kicks a ball already!

DS1 took 1 or 2 steps and 13mo, but didn't walk until 15.5mo!! Even then he was reallllly shaky for a long time! My friend had a DD who didn't walk till 17 mo!

You can encourage walking by only holding 1 hand so he has to balance better, try to hold a toy and get him to walk to you if he's standing and holding a table, etc... Don't worry, he'll get there!

  • Courtney will take a couple steps from time to time, but does not do it on  a regular basis. She will however walk on her knees. I am not concerned. I figure at this point, like everything else its just a matter of time.

My only concern is that although she choose not to walk, she has no problem climbing.

  • Ya us too.  I hate when people ask "is she walking yet? Oh no? hmmmmm"  You can read the judgement all over their faces.
  • Pen was walking while holding onto things for MONTHS!  Then, one day she just went for it & hasn't slowed down at all.
  • A was pretty cautious too with the walking and it wasn't until we went to a few play groups with older toddlers that he all of a sudden started walking on his own.  not just a step or two, but in like a course of a weekend started to go across the room. I was shocked I thought it would've been a slower progression. He was soooooo fast on all fours that for awhile he's going so quick he's face planting since his feet are pushing him too quickly sometimes.  After he started walking though he didn't really look back (this was maybe the last week of Jan or so).  We don't see his monkey/bear crawl hardly ever now, he just wanted to make sure he was good and ready.  and now he's trying to do the stairs holding our hands and the rails, he refuses to crawl up/down them....heaven help me.

  • Thanks everyone :)

I guess it's just that I want some comfort that his small size is not a problem for him.  I almost want to say to the doctor (and myself!) that "See, he's walking! Why are you so concerned about his smallness?" So I've been crossing my fingers that he will walk by our 15 month appointment!   That's really the only reason why I would want him to walk.  So I know that sometimes I seem crazy because I'm worrying about things that aren't really a problem, but it's really because I worry about the fact that he's small being the reason for these things, KWIM?
