Road Trip. Looking for tips and advice pls

It looks like we'll be hitting the road for a weekend away with little one.

The destination is 4 hours from home and the plan is to stay a couple of days/nights if all is going well.

What should we be sure to pack??

Any words of wisdom?

  • We had to drive back to AZ from CA with Braeden at age 3 weeks.  It was so easy as he slept the whole way.  We pulled over 1x to change him and feed him but otherwise he was asleep.  We did cut the drive in 1/2 (it was 8 hrs total) by staying in Palm Springs.  Both 4 hr segments he slept.  As for packing, we had a ton of items since we were in CA for 3+ weeks and bought a ton of baby stuff after he was born.  I would at least pack 2-3 outfits and pjs for the each day.

  • Pack extra clothes in the car!  We drive that far and twice as far pretty often and he almost always blows his diaper out on the trip, I don't know if the car rumbling makes him feel like letting loose or what.  But it seems like we always need them!  Our little one just sleeps though, we stop once to feed him and change him.
  • Like PPs have said, it should be pretty easy at this age.

    Pack:

    Clothes

    Burp Cloths/ Spill rags

    Binkies/ Comfort item

Blankets (multiples as one always falls in the snow or gets dirty)

The good news is that 99% of baby things can be bought at a local retailer where ever you are going.  Its that 1% that you can't find you should really make sure you pack.  For me, it was extra pump bottles as I pumped and fed while we were in the car and nursed once we got there.

  • I agree with everyone else.  It is very easy at this age.  We just did our first road trip last weekend.  Three things I was really glad I brought: 1. We put up a mirror in the back seat so we could easily see DD to know if she was really awake and needed something or just stirring a little. 2. We brought her bathtub.  It took up a lot of room in the car, but I didn't have to worry about how dirty the bathtub or sink would be where we were going. 3. Extra plastic bags.  We had a few blow outs on the trip.  I could just put it all in a bag since I wasn't at home to throw it in the washer.  Just be careful you rinse or put stain pre-treater on it so it doesn't stain!

  • It was really easy for us. We just got back from our trip to North Carolina from Florida. C slept pretty much the entire way, both ways. We  chose to drive overnight. We left at about 8 (C's bedtime) and she wasn't affected at all.

I had three seperate bags for her. Suitcases with all of her clothes for the week (2-3 outfits a day plus 2 sleepers per day), a smaller bag that had her blankets and burp cloths and such, and the diaper bag full of essentials for the car ride. We kept bottles, wipes, and diapers easily available.

When we stopped to get gas, I would wake her up to eat, change her dipe and she'd go back to sleep.

It was definitely a lot easier than I thought it would be. Now a year or two from now is going to be a whole different ballgame. Stick out tongue
