Cloth Diapering

My Washer Doesn't Change Temps

I got my CDs in the mail today and am getting all ready to start using them. I was reading the FAQs about washing dirty diapers and most of you said to do a cold pre-wash, hot wash and cold rinse. Well I can change temperature but it has to be for the whole load, I can't rinse in colder water than I washed in. For pre-wash, should I do an express wash (is that the same thing?!) in cold, then a normal wash in hot? But I don't know what to do about the rinse. Suggestions?

Re: My Washer Doesn't Change Temps

  • Does your washer have a "rinse" setting?  Mine has an "extra rinse" setting on the dial, so I do that first in cold, then run the entire load on a regular wash cycle with hot, then another extra rinse in cold.  If you don't have a setting for an extra rinse, I'd guess the express wash would be your best bet.

  • As for water temps, I have these options: cold/cold, warm/cold, hot/cold.  Makes me think that maybe your washer rinses on cold too even if you use a hot wash.

Also, since I have an older washer, I have to do the pre-rinse separately so I turn the dial to the part of the cycle that says rinse and it fills the tub up, sits for a couple minutes and then rinses out.  Then I have to start the wash cycle (however you would normally start a load of laundry).

This isn't my actual knob but see where it shows rinse? (Ignore red circles, I just pulled the image from google).  Hope this helps.

  • ugh my old washer did that! don't bother with a full express wash. if you don't have a rinse & spin choice, then like PP said, just start it at rinse from another setting. then do a hot wash (w/hot rinse) and a cold rinse. i didn't always do the second rinse, but i would if i felt like i had more to rinse out :)

That's it! I was just washing sheets, so when it was on the rinse cycle I ran down and felt it and they are cold! So thanks for pointing that out :)
