Starting IUI. What's your story?

Hi everyone!  After lots of trying and waiting my husband and I just found out we will be starting IUI.  I'm not sure what to expect.  I would love to hear your story! To know I'm not alone, helps!

Re: Starting IUI. What's your story?

  • Hello! I've done IUI 3 times & it's not fun, but it's not awful. Wink Are you taking clomid or doing injectables?

  • Hi!  I haven't started anything yet.  Once I go to my dr. he'll start me on both. Considering you've had it 3 times, at what point will your dr. look into other options? Or will you keep trying IUI until it's successful?  I wish you the best of luck!

  • My last IUI was the last one. The 2 IUI's I did with the RE I had 3 mature follicles each time and I feel like if it didn't happen then something is going on that an IUI won't get around. I go back next week to discuss my options, which is probably just IVF. IVF makes me really nervous, but IUI wasn't really that bad. The worst part for me was that my uterus is slightly tipped and the dr had a hard time getting the catheter inserted. Thanks & I wish you luck too!!

  • Hello - I only did 1 (obviously didn't work) but my RE only recommends 3 based on the law of diminishing returns. We are going to IVF based on my age and clock ticking so loud I can't sleep and also we are 100% OOP so I felt like I was throwing $ away (my story is in my siggy). I hear 6 IUIs is pretty standard if you have no severe MFI issues, but this will vary. Speaking of, what's your story, hun? We would like to get to know you too Smile
    Me: 37 DH: 40 TTC since 9/09

  • Hi and welcome. We're in the unexplained IF boat and I'm AMA. So after 3 failed clomid cycles we moved onto IVF.

Do they have a diagnosis for you? Good luck with your IUI

  • We did 10 IUIs before moving on to IVF. My RE couldn't find anything wrong with either of us so we tried IUI on different meds.

Come to find out - I have antibodies that are killing my DH's sperm so IVF was probably our only option.

  • My RE said to do 4 IUIs before moving onto IVF, but we ended up doing 5. The first two were just with Tamoxifen and trigger shot. The last three were with Tamoxifen, injections (Gonal-f), trigger shot, and prog supps. The last IUI cycle was the only time I had more than one mature follicle.

    Welcome and GL!
After 5 TI Clomid cycles, 5 IUIs, and 2 IVFs we finally got our BFP!

  • You will find a lot of the ladies on here have already tired IUI's and have moved on to IVF. If you want more input from people who are actually going through IUI's right now, there are a lot of great people on the Trouble TTC board as well. There's a lot of cross-over between the boards with people posting on both, but that tends to be more Clomid/IUI and this tends to be more IVF. You'll get great advice from both!

  • I am on IUI #2.  DH and I have been TTC for 3 years thus on this board as I feel more comfortable here.  I do Clomid, Gonal-F Injections, Trigger shot and Progesterone.  The IUI itself was not terrible and I have a slight tipped uterus.  I would say I was much more emotional on meds and my ovaries/lower stomach were crampy/sore.  Getting the BFN was terrible but hopefully you will have a BFP and not have to deal with that.  My doctor suggested only 3 IUI's and said we should know by then if it would work and then recommends IVF.  I may not move to IVF..just not sure.  May move to the adoption group from there.  Good Luck to you!!
Live like there is no tomorrow..Love like you have never been hurt...
  • Double Portion--->Do the dr's know why IUI isn't working?  It makes me worry.  Any updates on what your next step is?  Did you have your appointment to see if you are starting IVF?  Keep me updated!

  • 4legsRbest--->  Thank you for getting back to me.  I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work the first time.  All we can have is hope that something will work.  I had my HSG yesterday and everything came back normal.  We are to start IUI after my next cycle (about a month and a half away).  I feel like all I do is wait.

  • Snarling Fox--->  It's unfortunate that IUI didn't work for you.  I enjoy this message board and talking to others going through the same thing.  It helps to know I'm not alone.  Especially, since my husband and I don't want everyone around us knowing what's going on.  Please keep me updated on how IVF goes.   I am healthy but my husband has some infertility issues.  The dr's said it will be impossible to get pregnant the natural way.  The only way for it to be successful is to try other methods. I feel hopeful but down about too, considering it won't happen the "normal" way. What makes it harder is that everyone keeps asking us, "So when is it your turn?"  How are you feeling?
