Shopping with baby

When you go shopping where you have a lot of stuff where do you put baby? Do you put the car seat on top of the store carriage or in the back / large part of the carriage? Usually I just use my carriage and put stuff in the basket. But if you have to get big things that don't fit, what to do? I am going to target today and trying to figure out what is best.

Re: Shopping with baby

  • I normally put her in the large part of the shopping basket..I'm short, so it's tough to see over the car seat when it's in the top part of the basket.

  • I put the car seat on top. They don't always latch well though so I make sure to keep one hand on the car seat while pushing that cart with the other.

  • I've been putting the carseat in the basket part and I put whatever I'm buying in the seat part and underneath. Sometimes I put a shopping basket under the cart so I can fit more. I'll stuff some stuff around the carseat. I cant buy a lot or anything really big though.

When it's warmer, I'll wear her, but it's been so cold lately.

  • Even though many people do it, it's not safe to put the car seat on top of the shopping cart.  If the car seat falls off the cart, the baby could be seriously injured and die from the injuries.  I don't know the details of the news report where this happened at grocery store parking lot, but hopefully someone else will link to it.

I haven't gone shopping with my LO much, but when I needed to use a shopping cart, I put her car seat in the large part of the cart.  I just try to avoid getting big stuff when I'm with her.  I guess you could try to put it under the cart or ask an employee to assist you if you need something too large to fit under the cart.

  • I either put the seat on the top part of the car (which I'm not super comfortable with, I try to only do it in a pinch and I keep my hand on the seat the whole time) or I wear her in a carrier.

They don't latch well because they're not meant to go up there. They make the cart top heavy and it is very dangerous for LO.

  • DD goes in the seat and DS is in the large part. I just put the stuff around the carseat and underneath. If DH is along for the trip then we get two carts.

  • There was a news story last year about a baby who died because they were in a car seat set on top of the cart that fell.  They aren't designed to be put there.  Inside the bigger part is safer.

Personally, I put him in the moby wrap when we went grocery shopping.  The walking around put him right to sleep.

I don't know the family this happened to, but I live in the same town. The mom went grocery shopping at Kroger. Around here they will push your shopping cart out and help you load up your bags. She put the car seat on the top part of the cart. A store employee pushed the cart out for her and when they went over a speed bump very slowly the car seat flipped off the cart. That 3 month old died from head injuries. No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen! Now I put my LO in the big part of the cart.

  • I do all my big shopping trips with dh so we have a whole cart. Haven't mastered it yet lol and I don't feel comfortable putting her on the top part

  • I watched a car seat with baby inside fall off the cart at Costco once. The little girl looked to be about 12 months.. There was an ambulance at the store when we left, so the poor girl must of been hurt..

Please don't put them in the top part! I normally put my stuff in the basket below the stroller, and also hook a Shopping bag on the handles of the stroller and throw stuff in there.

  • if I need big things, I either send DH to the store, or go when he is home to stay with DD.  I only take her with me if I can fit everything i need into the basket of her stroller, or in the front/top part of a shopping cart (her carseat goes in the big part - NEVER on top)

If I ever have no choice but to bring her for a bigger trip, I will bring my Beco and wear her.

  • When DD was a baby I punted and got Peapod a lot.  Now I use the carrier sometimes, or else I put DS in the large part of the cart.  Our grocery store has child-size carts that DD can push, so if I go shopping with both of them she can fit a lot of stuff in there and I don't have to cram so much in the cart with DS.

  • Before DD was big enough to sit in the seat part, I wore her in the Moby
  • I'll be honest - with DS, I put the carseat on the front/top of the car area.  I didn't know it was a risk and it was what worked for me at the time.

Now that I have the two of them, it's not a choice anyhow.  DS sits in the seat and DD goes in the basket of the cart in her bucket seat.  By placing her carseat sideways across the car, it sits on top of the car so there is room underneath.  It is secure and doesn't affect the balance of the cart.  I just try to shift things around to fit them in the cart, and I do lift up her seat to put stuff underneath her too.  Our local grocery store actually has carts that are smaller than normal, so I do have to wear DD there.  Once it's warmer, I'll just plan to wear her everywhere, but it's a pain right now while it's so cold. Right now i use my Moby but as soon as she's less wobbly, I'll use my Ergo.
