Sitting on own

I think that being a FTM is very stressful sometimes and I read too much into physical developments and when they should happen.  My LO is a little over 5 months old.  He is not sitting on his own yet and really does not seem like he close to doing so.  He can roll over from his tummy to his back and he is getting very close to doing it the other way.  He also loves to be in his jumperoo and jump around.  However, he does not seem interested in sitting on his own at all.  Is this normal?  Is there a time that I should start to become concerned?

Re: Sitting on own

  • From what I've read, anywhere from 4 to 9 mos is normal for sitting.

My kid also doesn't sit.  She will for a minute or so, but then throws herself backwards.

Just talk to you ped at the  6 mo appt, but i'm sure she'll say it's normal.

  • Your baby is only a little over 5 months!  Don't be worried.  At this point you can encourage sitting but don't stress over it.  There's a wide range of normal when it comes to milestones.

  • I echo what the other posters said.  Don't worry about it at all, but bring it up to his doctor if you are concerned.  My DD is almost 6 1/2 months and not sitting fully unsupported yet.

  • No need to worry! As pp stated-- it can happen anywhere between 4-9 months. My daughter isn't sitting unassisted yet, and I am not the least bit worried.

Just remember that each baby is an individual and different. If your pediatrician isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be either.

  • Nope no need to worry as everyone has said. Our LO is not sitting up either yet and I am not worried or in a rush I know he will do it when he is ready :)

  • My DD sits like a champ but doesn't roll.  Her two "boyfriends" (6 & 7 months) both roll everywhere, but neither one sits.  They seem perfectly normal to me.  When I posted about my LO not rolling, I got responses that were all about girls!  I wonder if posting about an LO not sitting gets more responses about boys?

  • Thank you all so much!  I feel a lot better now!  Of course, I think I was making myself a lot more crazy than I needed to!

  • DD is 9 days shy of being 7 months, and as of about an hour ago, she is finally able to sit on her own. You definitely have nothing to worry about :)
