I have started to have some back problems lately and went to the chiropractor today. I was told that I have edema (fluid collection) in my lower back, but nowhere else at this point. The chiropractor said that since I don't have any, "pitting" when she pushes down into the area, she is not too concerned at this time but will relay the information to my OB to keep an eye on it. Has anyone else had difficulty with this?

Re: Edema in lower back?
I haven't had any, so I can't offer any personal experience. You've prob heard it's not uncommon to have some fluid retention generally in joints and extremities during pregnancy, and in theory your back is another set of joints. Too much fluid retention is bad, mild retention is unavoidable for some of us (my knuckles have been retaining fluids intermittently, but OB says its only mild, and since it goes away after a while its not a concern, but I'm supposed to check in with her if it stays for a long time). Yours sounds like its not chronic or severe, just a random finding at that one visit so far?
Your chiro is doing a good thing to be cautious and make sure your OB is aware of it, but until its signif amount of fluid, and it isn't going away, they prob will just observe for now. Just be sure to keep your OB up to date on it, so they can keep track of whether its becoming a problem.
