Cloth Diapering

Grovia question

So I'm wondering how useful the Grovia hybrids are as covers with that soft mesh fabric lining the insides.  I imagine prefolds and their inserts leak through and get that wet so then it would be a one and done diaper unless you use the disposable inserts with them? I'm brainstorming diapering plans for our trip when the baby is 2 mo and the thirsties duo size 1 covers may be too small by then if we have a big baby (very possible in my family).  I was thinking of doing prefolds through the local service but it's $23/wk + their start up fee and we'll be there 2 wks.  I don't want to have to learn a new wash routine but at that rate, it may be cheaper to do it that way and bring our prefolds if baby still fits them.  The water there is hard (ours is soft) so I don't think I can use Charlie's soap there with all I read about Charlie's + hard water = chemical burns on baby.  Lots of time to figure this out but I got a bunch of Grovia covers from a friend so if they are an option with prefolds and can actually be used more than once, then I won't need to worry about getting more covers to use with prefolds for the trip.  Sorry for the rambling.  Figure that if I use the Grovia or gdiaper disposable inserts, I might as well just buy sposies while I'm there.  Would prefer to use cloth.

Re: Grovia question

  • I use my Grovia covers all the time with my flats.  I usually only use 2 covers a day, which is normal in our house.

ETA:  I have the Gro-via disposable inserts and love them for when we are traveling/away.  Much less bulk to pack and waste, IMO.  I have never had a problem with them in the covers, either.

  • I've used PFs in my GV covers many, many times without issue.

Also, I would think it a VERY slim chance that your baby will outgrow the Thirsties Duo size 1 by 2 months.  My son was a big baby (10lbs, 8 oz at birth) and fit size 1 duos until he was about 6 months old.

  • Thanks!  Good to know even chunky monkeys can fit those thirsties covers for awhile.

So even with using prefolds in a jelly roll style or angel fold they won't soak through to the mesh?  I can see that trifolding them would stop it but wonder about the other folds.  Also saw online that the Grovia stay dry inserts have a tpu backing, which I didn't realize. Those may be easier to pack along with their disposable versions.

Now you see why I ask so early!  I've got the motto of being extra prepared way ahead of schedule.  Lol!

  • We have the stay dry inserts and as you said they are backed so we don't have any leaking! We can use 1 cover all day and just keep switching our inserts! I absolutely LOVE them!
  • Now i'm trying to decide if I should pick up a bunch more of those for the trip.  Those inserts are certainly small to pack...so indecisive.  Thanks for the help ladies!

I never tried a traditional fold with the PF under the GV shell; I always did a trifold.  The GV inserts are very absorbent and are very trim to pack.  I highly recommend them.
