Which formula do you use?

We have started DS on Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas. He started on Friday and was drinking straight formula through this morning. The problem was he seemed to be straining and grunting even more than usual. Last night was probably one of the worse nights weve had with him since the first 3 weeks. We would put him down but within a half an hour he would be up again. He did this until 2 am when he ate again and fell asleep. He slept until 530 and then did the half an hour thing for the rest of the night. I am wondering if the formula was making him sick or if it was giving him gas. We went back to being 50/50 with breast milk and we'll see how that goes. I am just wondering if this is the right formula for him to be using. There are so many options out there and I know I need to give it time for him to adjust, but how do you know if this one agrees with them or if you should try something else?

Re: Which formula do you use?

  • I will be interested to see the answers to this since I am using the same formula and DS seems to be doing the same thing...

  • We were not able to use Gentlease or Similac Sensitive as it gave B tons of gas.  We ended up on Soy formula and that seems to be better as he has milk intolerance.  Another one you can try is Gerber Gentle...I have heard a lot of babies that couldn't do GE or SS did fine on it.

  • I use Gerber GoodStart Gentle with 2 month old and he takes it just fine. I've tried the others, Similac, Enfamil, and a store brand, and he had the same reaction your son had. The straining and grunting kept him up most of the night, it was awful. Gerber is the only formula he can take. Also, Gerber doesn't foam up when you shake the bottle like a lot of other formulas do. That mixed with bottles that take drop in liners have pretty much taken care of his gas problems.

     Hope that helps :)

  • DD reacted similarly with the Similac Sensitive so I tried Gerber GS Gentle and it was HORRIBLE she had even worse problems with gas, was throwing almost everything she ate up, hard green poops, etc so we finally settled on Enfamil Gentlease she still has some problems with gas/spitting up but not nearly as bad as with either of the first ones I have wondered about trying Soy Formula but when I tried talking to the pedi about it at her last appointment he wouldn't listen to anything I said and insisted it was because she ate too much and that I needed to feed her no sooner than every 4 hours so we have an appointment with a different pedi next week. I hope you find what works for you!

  • DS started on similac advanced and puked it all up then switched to sensitive and still puked so we switched to enfamil prosobee and he still pukes bc we found out he has reflux but he does much better on it. Its not as think or chunky.

  • Do you mix the bottles ahead of time or as you need them?  If you mix ahead if time and refrigerate the bubbles will go down, which may help.  My friend dies this with her son.

  • My daughters also been having horrible stomach pain/gas problems. I'm sure some of the pain stems from her reflux. I tried switching to gentlease but that recently started gas problems. Switched to similac sensitive and she still has gas problems, just not as often as she was having them. I'm considering switching to soy based formula but know that most pediatricians don't reccomend in unless there are signs the child has a milk protien allergy. My LO is not showing any signs of an allergy, but she's definetly got a senstive stomach and I hate seeing her in so much pain from gas. Does anyone here know if there is there a reason why pediatricians are so against switching to a soy based formula?
