We have started DS on Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas. He started on Friday and was drinking straight formula through this morning. The problem was he seemed to be straining and grunting even more than usual. Last night was probably one of the worse nights weve had with him since the first 3 weeks. We would put him down but within a half an hour he would be up again. He did this until 2 am when he ate again and fell asleep. He slept until 530 and then did the half an hour thing for the rest of the night. I am wondering if the formula was making him sick or if it was giving him gas. We went back to being 50/50 with breast milk and we'll see how that goes. I am just wondering if this is the right formula for him to be using. There are so many options out there and I know I need to give it time for him to adjust, but how do you know if this one agrees with them or if you should try something else?
Re: Which formula do you use?
I use Gerber GoodStart Gentle with 2 month old and he takes it just fine. I've tried the others, Similac, Enfamil, and a store brand, and he had the same reaction your son had. The straining and grunting kept him up most of the night, it was awful. Gerber is the only formula he can take. Also, Gerber doesn't foam up when you shake the bottle like a lot of other formulas do. That mixed with bottles that take drop in liners have pretty much taken care of his gas problems.
Hope that helps

My daughters also been having horrible stomach pain/gas problems. I'm sure some of the pain stems from her reflux. I tried switching to gentlease but that recently started gas problems. Switched to similac sensitive and she still has gas problems, just not as often as she was having them. I'm considering switching to soy based formula but know that most pediatricians don't reccomend in unless there are signs the child has a milk protien allergy. My LO is not showing any signs of an allergy, but she's definetly got a senstive stomach and I hate seeing her in so much pain from gas. Does anyone here know if there is there a reason why pediatricians are so against switching to a soy based formula?
