NTR: Anyone ever had an inconclusive pap smear?

I had my yearly pap smear about a week and a half ago.  I got a call from my doctor's nurse that I'll need to come back in just for them to swab me again real quick because the results came back "inconclusive."  Basically she said they didn't get enough cells to be able to test...?  She said sometimes this can be due to blood up there, but my period had been over for about a week prior to going.  Anyone else had an inconclusive pap smear? I've never heard of such and I'm 24 and never had anything like this myself.  I was super worried but have done a little research and found it can sometimes be common....

  • Sometimes at our clinic we get pap smears back that say there was not enoug cells for a satifactory report. When that happens they have to come back in to try again for more. Maybe that's the case! Good luck!

  • Before having kids each year I would ge a pap (I was on the BC pill) and everytime without fail, I'd get a call 1-2 weeks later asking me to come back because it was inconclusive. Basically they take what looks like a teeny tiny bottle brush and then do your second pap with that, to collect more cells. IndifferentTongue Tied

  • I had pap smears at my 6 week pp checkup after I had each child.  Both times, my pap smears came back inconclusive.  The doctor said that your body changes givign birth and sometimes it is more difficult for 6months-1 year after you give birth to get a good pap smear.   Both of mine turned out fine after they did it again.

FYI- because they are trying harder to get the cells, they spend more time and rub harder.  It was a little more painful - I won't lie to you -- but it is only for a few seconds.

  • I have had them on more than one occasion.  It freaks me out every time because I had a LEEP procedure done years ago so I am always nervous when it comes to getting PAP results.

  • I've had one. They told me that many things could cause one- tampons, having sex, doctor didn't get a good swab, ect. I just had to get another one & it came back fine. I've never had a bad one since. I wouldn't worry.
  • My first pap PP had this happen. My dr told me that it wasn't a bad pap, just not enough to test. They repeated the pap and it came back normal.
