DS2 will use a spoon for things that he can just dip it into and then lick the spoon but he has no interest in scooping anything and likes to throw forks.
DS likes to use a fork. He tries to stab a piece of food, but usually isn't successful. If I get food on the fork, he will take it & get it into his mouth.
Yes, J would LOVE to use silverware but he just doesn't have the coordination yet so it takes forever. He is funny with his fork, after trying unsuccessfully to stab something he will put it down then carefully place a piece of food on it. Of course the food falls off when he picks up the fork, he makes the saddest face.
I think he decided he wanted a fork one night when we were having dinner & my 2.5yo nephew was using one. I think he wants to be a big kid like his cousin. :-)
Jackson can use a spoon but needs a little help with it sometimes. I still prefer to feed him with it, though, because he makes a HUGE mess. I let him practice, though.
I didn't think he'd get the concept of a fork until I saw Kellog's Gray using one. He totally got it! He has a hard time getting things to stay 'stabbed' onto it, but he's pretty good with it.
I feel bad, because I don't really let E use them yet. When I give one to him he usually just ends up using it like a drum stick.
In between bites Jack does this too.. He also likes to 'sweep' his tray with them.
All of this. I've been really bad about letting my LO use utensils because of these reasons. And the mess! Oh my goodness, what a mess. I guess I just need to suck it up and let him do it.

Thor did all of this too. But after some time and direction, he's gotten pretty good. If he can't stab the food he picks it up and places it on the fork (or spoon if that's what he has). He doesn't scoop with a spoon, but he gets either a fork or spoon ate very meal to practice.
DD just mastered scooping with the spoon. She goes slowly but she loves being able to do it herself. The fork she likes but more to stab food with than eat with.

I would quote and lol your comments but I'd seriously have to do that for at least half the entries in this thread.
We're on a 2-3 spoon rotation whenever spoons are used. B likes to feed himself but isn't very successful yet, so give one spoon to him and keep one spoon for me and try to get actual food in his mouth between bites. But then he realizes that I have a spoon, so he wants mine, so then he has 2 and I have1 and it turns into a spoon juggling match between the two of us. He likes to dip the spoon in his bowl, but hasn't figure out how to twist it around to get the full part in his mouth.
He also likes to flip the spoon around and gnaw on the metal end. It makes you wonder/worry - B and the other babies on this thread are the future world leaders.
Yes, he is interested. He needs a little help scooping or poking the food, but he can bring it to his mouth & eat off the utensil on his own. Once he gets a pice in his mouth, he makes a noise to get my attention & he's poking the tray with the utencil - basically telling me he is ready to scoop up another piece!
The other day he got a piece of pasta on his spoon all by himself when I wasn't looking. But when I saw him there holding it, I had to do a double take! Then the spoon made it to his mouth! You would have thought I just won the lottery or something, lol. I was jumping up & down cheering - so proud of him!

I have to scoop food on it then hand it to him so he can feed himself. Otherwise he won't eat lol. We haven't tried a fork yet
